Post by: DOdgers on May 23, 2012, 12:52:57 pm
Does anyone know any good vigorous climbers that are not poisonous to goats?
Thanks

I think the ivy leaves are fine, it's the berries that are poisonous. Is that right?

Everything in moderation, a bit of Ivy is fine. Mine love bindweed too which is handy as their paddock is next to the veggie patch which is always being attacked by the stuff.

Ivy's ok in small quantities but I'm not sure I'd want mine to have access to a lot.

Honeysuckle and clematis are poisonous to goats.

Grape vine isn't apparently, don't know about hop?

Grape vine is very palatable apparently.  Mine used to have the prunings of the grape vine where I worked.

I got my info on honeysuckle from here http://fiascofarm.com/goats/poisonousplants.htm (http://fiascofarm.com/goats/poisonousplants.htm) which lists it as edible  :-\  and this site also lists it as a browsing plant for goats http://www.goatworld.com/articles/nutrition/managingforages.shtml (http://www.goatworld.com/articles/nutrition/managingforages.shtml)

I wonder if there is a difference between shrubby and vine honeysuckles?

I would be careful in using American sites for info on poisonous plants, as their use of names does not always tie up with our names here... I wouldn't risk honey suckle.

You could always try brambles.... :-\
