After looking as sheep at the Royal Welsh show yesterday I have decided that I like the Coloured Ryelands.
Has anyone got any experience with them?.
Are they good for a beginner?
I have 2 acres, split into two fields so would graze one field at a time. How many sheep should I get?

well when she gets home from the show ask Rosemary, she has coloured ryelands and they are very friendly.
i know nothing about sheep and think they are awesome, they look like big teddy bears!!!

Bloomer I was talking to Rosemary at the show yesterday. At that stage I hadn't been to see the sheep. Sounds as if I missed an opportunity but I will catch up with her on here when she gets back
thanks

Hi Bionic
I have both coloured & white ryelands and I am not a million miles from you. I was on the Ryeland stand this morning at the RW show ground. If I can help please feel free to contact me.

A picture of some of my Ryelands awaiting haircuts.

Yes, as bloomer said they look like big teddy bears. I was speaking to the ladies on the Ryeland stand on Saturday and took a leaflet away with me. They gave me the name of someone local, so not sure if that is you.
I will pm you the details

Love my Ryelands - just as well you didn't start me about them at the show - we'd still be there as I wax lyrical about their attributes ;D

I dont never see any in these parts but i do like them.

Rosemary,
Are they easy for a first timer?

Ryelands were our first sheep that we have kept to breed and they are lovely. Our two girls are white but our ram is coloured. Last year our girls both lambed successfully producing twins, one white and one coloured and a single white. This morning we have just had a dear little white single and shes a girl so she will be staying. Again no problems. I think they are lovely sheep to have and one day I might just get round to learning to spin their fleece. :)

I love my Ryelands too. So much so infact, that I sold a small starter flock to someone last year who (for personal reasons) is having to give them up................and I'm buying 'em all back again....along with the lambs they've had this year ;D ;D
But my Greyfaces still have that little 'something' extra ........ as Hazelwood knows ;) ;) ;) ;)

Have you still got Karen? I just love her twin. She throws lovely lambs.

Yup, sure have and although she had twin ram lambs this year, they are both really good ones - and I'm going to register both of them

That's good news. Have you thought about showing them in the local shows this year or is it your Grey Faced Dartmoors?

Definately taking the GFDs but I MIGHT take a Ryeland too........ just worried about the "trimming" malarky ;D

Yup: horrible feet! But a lovely temperament. The GFDs at Builth were laid-back like mine

Coloured do not have to be trimmed as extensively. If it is a lamb wash & tidy face & tail . Try it the show bods will soon put you right. Try out one of the very small shows.

Ok, if the coloureds don't have to have all that trimming and whathaveyou, then I'll have a go with a lamb ;D Do they go in AO Lowland????

Could be. I would check with the show organisers and they should put you right.
