Title: Size of Eggs
Post by: Liz M on May 04, 2012, 07:20:01 pm
I'm brand new at keeping chickens. Is it normal for the first eggs to be very small? I have 3, 20 week old chickens, who have laid their first 5 eggs, but they actually rattle in a medium egg box. Help :chook:

Yes, it often is, they'll settle down soon, but it also depends on the breed and the size of the hens themselves.  What are they?

They will produce eggs that get steadily bigger. As the hens get into their second year they may lay fewer eggs but they will be larger still.

The very first eggs produced are sometimes very small and may even contain no yolk.

Enjoy  ;D

Thanks for that. I actually don't mind about the size, it is so good having them rooting about in the garden
