Title: Bloody mucus in diarrhea
Post by: nic99 on May 01, 2012, 10:32:12 am
My 6 month old munsterlander pup has just this morning started passing diarrhea with a bit of blood and mucus in it. Not loads, but enough to notice on inspection. The diarrhea is not watery, but pretty soft. The blood is a mid-red colour, not bright but not brown either (sorry for detailed description but I thought it is likely needed). She has passed some about 4 times already this morning, just a small amount each time. She was perfectly fine yesterday and seems to be fine in herself. Ate her breakfast with gusto, no vomiting. Should I panic and get her to the vets straight away or is it something just to be kept an eye on and see how she goes?

With things like this, I always ring the vets for advice.  They are more than happy to let me know if I have to bring them down.  I do have a very good vet though, who knows they can't take the mick with me.

Yeah, I rang them and the receptionist said it if there was blood it's best to get her checked out. Have an appointment for this afternoon. No point in taking any risks.

IMO blood and mucous together indicate some inflammatory activity - probably in the lower gut region

But that's only based on my knowledge of humans.....

A dog vet will be along shortly to opine :-)

Not a vet but I've seen plenty of poo  ::)

Dark brown blood is from higher up the system (stomach-ish); light "fresh" blood is from nearer the bum - think piles, cuts etc. Mucous implies irritation and inflammation. Has she eaten anything she shouldn't that might have got a bit stuck? Or perhaps a food intolerance...?

Good luck at vets  :)

Back from the vets. He wasn't overly concerned. No temperature, not dehydrated and seems bright enough. Apparently very common to get blood in it. He gave her an antibiotic injection just in case and we have some probiotic paste to give her over the next few days. Gave it to her when we got back and she has just now thrown it all back up again  ::). No dinner tonight (she is going to be very unimpressed about this!) and bland meals for the next couple of days. The diarrhea has steadily been getting worse, it is pretty much running out of her now. Feels like I have spent most of the day cleaning up dog doo and now vomit. The vet said it should only last 24/36 hours or so. Most likely something viral or a reaction to something she's eaten. Probably something nice and decomposed she found on our walk yesterday. She eats everything, no matter how gross! Thanks for all your advice, please keep your fingers crossed that it stops soon. She is asleep at the moment so we are both enjoying a little reprieve.

Glad you got her checked out and it's nothing serious  :)

Our GSD used to do this with any change of diet, anything rotten eaten......lovely  ::)::)

Best to teach them the Leave command  - use a word that comes to you automatically - like eh eh!, or LEAVE, or no"  - and be consistent.  Dogs seem to love looking for the most vile, ancient, disgusting, smelly things to put down their throats ::) - dead or alive. >:(

At the moment it's mice with my lot and if I am there they drop it on command but when out in the garden like now and me inside working anything could be going  into them. ::)  Their stomachs do seem to became inured to it as they get older I find so I hope that is the case with your wee one. ;D

Is doggy vaccinated? There are some nasty gut bugs around our way- east Devon. Seeing lots of vom and diarrhoea. Bland food little and often and gradual change to normal food over a few days.

Good news, Clover seems to be much better this morning. No poos yet, which I am taking to be a good sign, but we shall see later on if she is totally recovered or not. She knows the leave command but will only obey it if I see it first, otherwise it is gulped down quicker than you can blink! She is fully vaccinated.
