Title: skinned lamb disguise
Post by: humphreymctush on April 27, 2012, 09:56:08 am
A gimmer had twins and rejected one but was very attentive to the other. I put her in the adopting pen which was working well until she sat on the lamb she liked, leaving just the rejected one. I decided to skin the dead lamb and make a coat for the rejected one. This worked a treat and she immediately accepted it.
I havent done this before so can any one tell me how long will she need to wear the skin and whether it will dry out or go rotten?

Generally once the ewes milk has gone through the lamb for a few days and it has 'her' smell the ewe will be quite happy. We used to leave them on for about a week or so. Yes it will get quite smelly in that time!

Skinning a lamb is just like skinning a rabbit but I did recently hear of a commercial sheep farmer who merely makes a small hole in the skin then inserts an air line (From a compressor) - this then just blows up the skin loosening it from the body. Just thought I'd share that vision with everyone! ;D

Children don't try this at home!

I did just skin it like a rabbit, but then I based my design on a lamb-mac,
Next time I'll try a foot pump.

Next time I'll try a foot pump.

Doubt it would have enough pressure and I'm not advocating the technique. I just have visions of exploding dead lambs across the countryside!

After 2 days the skin was stinking out the whole shed so I took it off yesterday and the ewe didnt bat an eyelid. Now I've turned them both out and they're doing fine. I forgot to mention that the lamb was brown and the skin was white. So clearly its all about smell and not appearance.
