Title: CEA/PRA testing (Collies)
Post by: smudger on April 25, 2012, 08:19:33 pm
Well Corrie, our new pup, is now settled at home.  I haven't got a clear handle on collie tests. The vet mentioned that an eye test is best done at 8 weeks but haven't found anything on google to confirm this. Not expecting problems, but may breed in future if he turns out good. Just wondered if any tests should be done now or can be at a later date?  thx

Some mild cases of CEA can be seen at eight weeks & not later. Referred to as go normals, but the DNA test will show these up.

Hi the Dna test will only show CEA status so eye examination is necessary for PRA & glaucoma in collies, however this can be done at any age. Normally this would be done within 1 year of the mating to be accepted if stud dog owners are concerned.
With other tests it depends how far you want to go. There are a couple of other DNA tests - for CL & TNS
Also hip & elbow scoring.

I just wish there was a test for epilepsy
