i have been turning the site i have from an overgrown badly planned arboretum to a productive fruit and veg plot without a swimming pool. this winter my boy and i have broken the back of this and have done more in 6 months than we got done in the last 2 years. my thoughts are turning to keeping animals next. when i was growing up we had loads of chickens the odd goat i remember butting me into a wall once, pigs and various dogs cats guinea pigs etc. so is there a good time to start this next adventure? or is it a suck it and see? thinking start with a few chickens and see how we go!

no time like the present phil, get stuck in with some chooks!

I would say its a great time to start on your chicken adventure ;D

my dad used to keep Maran and they were great eggs but grumpy and prone to laying in the bushes. what breeds would you recommend? would be good to have young cocks for the coq-u-vain.

light sussex, well hung.

well hung?

yup. like a pheasent, my last one i hung for 7 nights but that was in the depths of winter. ive found fresh cockerel to be too chewy even roasted slowly but hanging them relaxes the meat. i did put a thread up about it ages ago, most peoples opinion was not to hang, or to pluck and draw fresh then leave in the fridge for a day or two, a few people said to hang so i tried it, ill always hang now the taste was amazing.
sylvia breeds cornish game hen to a light sussex cock and thats the meat hybrid ill be breeding next, hopefully!

cool, i am a big fan of the hanging side of things. always leave my partridge for a good 5 days for the flavour i like. all the beef i buy is hung for at least 3 weeks and the flavour is second to none. how much am i looking at for each bird and how much for a cock?

try sending sylvia a pm, you might be able to source some there if your down this way. my pol hens were 10 each iirc.
