Title: Sudden appetite increase, ?weight loss
Post by: YorkshireLass on April 15, 2012, 03:55:02 pm
Am I missing an obvious reason for a collie's appetite to go bananas?

She is 5, can be a bit greedy and often nibbles on grass/licks soil  ::)
As of last Thursday-ish, she's been ravenously hungry, nearly taking my fingers off when I offer food, and inhaling her main meal in seconds.
What is niggling is that she's not put on weight - if anything her ribs are more prominent. I'm going to dig out the scales if I still have them and weigh her tonight.
I have wormed her (Drontal) and if she's like this during the week then off we go to vet. I'm giving her extra food!
No significant change in routine, exercise, weather...?

Thoughts?

Drinking more? Peeing more?
Is she spayed?

No apparent change in drinking/peeing habits.
No she's not spayed, last season was a few weeks ago...

No external signs of anything- lumps, bumps, scratches, eyes fine, ears still attached... Nothing unusual around the back end either.

The drinking/peeing question was about diabetes, which can result in increased appetite but not increased weight. Dad's first sheepdog was diabetic, I have one of her daughters who is going that way too.

Something has increased her metabolic rate then. She isn't pregnant I don't suppose?

have you checked her REALLY well for lumps & bumps?
tumours, benign or malignant, can cause  weight loss but increased appetite

How suddenly would these things come on?
She was checked over last month as her boosters were due - all fine then.
Hope no pups  :o  she was crated next to an entire dog for a couple of hours, after her fertile period - judged as best I can - but people can always misjudge...

I was always taught a sudden increase in appetite was a good indication that a particular mating was succesful :o
I would get her checked out, were there's a will(y) there's a way ;)

Just a suggestion, measure Daily water intake if possible, and check faeces for colour and odd smell ( not normal smelling dog s...t. Take a fresh urine sample to vet appt ( lots can be found and eliminated in a pee test ;D
Good luck, hopefully something simple going on.

Yes, taking urine along would be a good plan.

How to get a urine sample from a bitch? Lurk, armed with a frying pan, until she squats, then slide it under  :D

another option could be overactive thyroid

My first thought also was thyroid, better to get the vet to check her out.

Vet booked for Wednesday evening  Though I bet it feels like a long wait!  :-[

Urine sample collection would be interesting...she has a kind of...rotational...sprinkler...approach  :o

For now I'm giving her extra food, but not crazy amounts.

Put a towel down, and squeeze out into a container?

Under active thyroid causes weight gain. Dogs don't suffer from overactive thyroids. This however is common in old cats with the above symptoms described.
Be wary of using wrung out towel for contamination and giving false results on tests.

Hope things are ok Yorkshirelass  :bouquet:

Vet shrugged.
Temp normal, her weight hadn't actually changed (my scale batteries have vanished so I couldn't weigh her), no obvious signs upon having her belly squidged....so  ???

She's fine in herself, just have to see how we go  :)

Oh well, I suppose if it had been something drastic they would have found it  :-*

Thank goodness, it may just have been a temporary hungry spell.  Is she still eating more than usual?

Just had a thought - was she fairly slim before, even though you said she was a bit greedy?  Perhaps she is just settling into middle age?  ;D

we had to take a urine sample from our girl lab, made a contraption by halving a plastic milk bottle, when she went to squat, slipped it under, worked a treat, bad news is she has renal failure!

Yes she's on the lean side (well, one of us has to be!).
I thought the appetite was settling down but I just found her face-first in the sack of dog food  :o ::) my faut for leaving that door open!

Sorry to hear about your lab thestephens  :(
