Title: Decorating Tower or high step ladder wanted
Post by: Sandy on April 13, 2012, 02:26:28 pm
Hi, we have high ceilings and when we need to do things we have to hire a three way ladder, we are thinking about buying one but money is ear marked for other things so if any one has one going that they want to sell, let me know, can be a tower or a ladder that will stand alone, we can borrow any amount of ladders and we have one ourself but no good for the middle of the room!!!! We are in central Scotland and just wondering on the off chance!!

Sandy,
We have a high stepladder that I have used for painting the high ceilings in our Glasgow house before we moved. from memory I don't think your ceilings are any higher than ours were.  You could certainly borrow this - we are near Wishaw so a little way away. Pm me if you like.

Thats great,, would be fantastic if they are transportable.  I will PM you but is it in short enough bits to collect? The one we usualy rent from tool hire gets delivered....we have to mend a ceiling rose in the dinning room where we held the meeting and then some smoke alarms on the landing and hall!!!!

It is in one bit  :)  ie fixed  at the top where it hinges and when the legs move apart there is a flat large top step which locks into place and which you can either stand on or if on a lower down stop put your paint pot on. If you can picture that. So it probably would not go in a vehicle - not sure maybe in a 4wd or similar stretching from front seat to boot - but on a roof rack or in a trailer. I can measure it if u like - it's up in the shed.

Thats a shame as it will not go in our car and defets the object to pay to get it delivered....we may be able to buy a pre owned one or a tower....if you had high ceilings you will know you need a high ladder quite often!!!!! we will give it some thought!!! its around £50 to hire the one we had before and they left it with us for ages as they did not have any one available to collect it!!!!! we need a bigger vehicle as we keep comming up against transport problems with all sorts of things!!! thanks again anyway  !!

sorry should have clarified, i have a very long pole roller like 20ft that does ceilings just fine then a normal ladder can be used for round the edges,

only tricky bit is round light fittings etc... obviously you have to dust sheet really well if going this route as its a bit messy.

We have to fix the plaster ceiling rose so a fill in a hole jobby and also  put up some wireless smoke alarms that have sat here for ages awaiting to be put up....thanks Bloomer....trouble is working off a lader is not that great at that hight...the ceiling rose has a big hole in the middle where there used to be a center light fitting, it was removed some years ago and now there is a hole that apparently needs filling in due to fire risk...we could also put  up another light but not able to put in a working light as the electrics need re newing in that bit!! Our painters did the whole house with some pole like you said and they did a great job!!!!!  Thanks...we may well be able to sort of fix the smoke alarm OK but not sure about the hole!!

i regularly work at height of 20+ft off ladders with my various jobs, the record for free standing indoors is 24ft but that requires special ladders that belong to a friend 300 miles away, for 12 ft you only need 6ft steps and a head for heights.

if its just bits that won't take long i may be able to sort it and save you the cost of a hire, if there are lots of jobs then hiring is the way to go.

Not a lot at all, we have loads of chippy work but no spare cash at the mo...THats nearly always the case...we have just cleared our bank account paying the gas and electric bill ::) ::)...Do you do decorating then? We had a chap but he tried to put a hatch in one of our rooms and to be frank it looks a bit of a mess...not the mans fault as he is not skilled...we also got the house painted and thats a mess now too, all the black masonery paint is peeling...I will have a word with my financial advisor (hubby) but you are more than welcome to pop to take a look and see what you think!!!!! IF we had just a bit more money we could find loads of work!!!

Would that be safe to do with your hip problems?  I wouldn't tackle it and I don't have anything wrong with me.  ::)  Do be careful.  Better to get Steve to do it, he's a lot younger than you and much fitter - and that's what husbands are for aren't they?   ;) ;D ;D
