Title: Market sticks
Post by: colliewoman on April 08, 2012, 05:54:52 pm
Does anyone one here make these?
In case it's a regional thing, I'm after a 'mini' crook as I'm on some new crazy pills and they seem to make me a bit wibbly. I hate the Idea off using a stick, but a market stick is a useful piece of kit that I can lean on if I need to!

If anyone does make them, or have one they want to sell, could you please get in touch?
Sale or barter, either or suits me. If barter have a think about what you would like in return ;D

Thankies

(on the plus side, the new 5-htp pills are fantastic! Natural and I can really feel the benefit already after only a few days. If you have head issues, google it! :-*)

I found a brilliant one in the forest but dare not lean on it in case its not strong enough but it is good for pocking things ::)!!! I did have a walking pole but I get arthritis in my hands and cramp if I hold anything too long  ::) I mean for any length of time :-[   Interesting that my tablets for Arthritis in my spine made me very depressed and that's not a normal thing for me, gave them up and all is great now on strong pain killers..depression is horrid so I do sympathise, thankfully not a sufferer other than when I took the medication!!!!

Hi Colliewoman
Are any of these any good to you? I really won't be offended if there not ;D. I made them last year in my stick classes. I would love to barter for chickens or ducks (if you have any) but the distance makes that impractical. So sorry to say I'm looking for £75 +postage each.

This one is Buffalo horn on chestnut shaft 551/2 inches high

This is Ram horn on Ash shaft 4ft high ( the purple blob  on the shaft is a butterfly)

This one is African rosewood on chestnut shaft 56 inches high

If they are to high you can cut bits off the bottom. The first two I ever made I cut over a foot off the end of them so my grandparents could use them as proper walking sticks.

THey are wonderful, I bet they are quite tactile to hold too....I saw a country programme where they made sticks from brussel stalks and from bulls willies!!!!!!  not sure how long they were but I am only 5ft so probaly would do, I shall try to take a photo of the stick I found in the forest, its been in the garage but not been altered...think it would polish up nice but like I said before..holding stuff makes my hands cramp up..YOurs are very nice Bert!

I have a lovely thumbstick with a ram's horn "thumb" bit, made by a dear man who made and sold them for prostate cancer research. He succumbed recently to this awful disease.
I use my stick daily and find it useful for more than just helping me up the steep bits of field, it's an extra arm when herding sheep, a back scratcher for pigs, a dreadful warning for naughty whippets and children :o ;D and an extra length of arm for reaching things.
If only "her next door" would shriek and screech at me on the road instead of from the safety of her bedroom window it might even turn into an offensive weapon ::)

I sometimes take my collapsable walking stick and then I can put it in my ruckstack with a stool attatched  ;), like I said, I get cramp in my hand and a bad shoulder if I hold anything for too long...,maybe have to one day!!! I also used the stick to pull down fruit to pick when out walking but the one in the pic my dog has its eye on!!
