Title: Lump in my throat
Post by: Growler on April 06, 2009, 08:39:36 pm
Today my 10 year old black rock chicken, Big Sandra, was humanely killed by the local farmer. I can't believe how upset I was, huge lump in my throat, tears and snotters. I had tried everything but the last few days she would not eat or drink anything and today she didn't come out of her bed. She was so skinny and so unhappy. It was all over in a second, of course she got the full funeral service. Some of my friends can't understand how people can get attached to hens but then they have never sat on a summers day watching hens and all their antics. I think their is nothing more pleasant.

So sorry - it's only people who've never had hens who say "it's only a hen". Big Sandra had a very long and happy life - be thankful and proud of that.

Goodness - 10 years!  That's a good age and you can be proud you looked after her so well. And did teh right thing by her at the end.

I had no idea chickens could live that long, you did really well.  And had the kindess to give her a quick ending.  What more could any hen want.

I think you did the right thing and theres no shame in being upset. Just proves you love your animals and want the best for them.
