Title: Jacobs' Horn
Post by: HappyHippy on April 03, 2012, 07:45:24 am
My friend is a crook/stick maker (and quite a good one too - he recently got 2 firsts and Best in show ) he's looking for Jacobs' horn to make a stick with. Apparently it's great to work with and has a lovely grain running through it, he got quite excited talking about it with a real twinkle in his eye ;D. Does anyone have any that they would be willing to part with ? He has said that any kind of horn would be great, but I think it's especially the Jacobs' he'd like  ;)
Many thanks in advance  :-*

Hi HappyHippy
Your friend is not the only one looking for ram horn (of any breed) :sheep:. That stuff is like gold dust, especially stick making quality  ::) a lot of it is to hollow to work with. I completely under stand your friend getting a twinkle in his eye when he talks about it. I really enjoy stick making.
I was considering posting the very same question as you have asked in Crafts ???.
Any way sorry I can't help, just letting you and your friend know your not alone in your quest ;D

I sometimes have Hebridean horn, but I know they need to be from mature 2 horned rams.  Can you specify the size suitable please.   Heb horn is mostly black but like Jacob it has some white running through it and makes a beautiful crook.

Could I possibly have one of your horns please Juliette, next time you have any?
It would give the perfect excuse for a wee drive up to see some lambs  ;) ;D
Thank you very much  :-*

Bert, I'll keep my ears open and if I hear of any more I'll let you know
I can see why you'd enjoy stickmaking - the results are beautiful...........wish I had the time & skill  :)

We've only got one lamb so far Karen  ;D

We have a pile of horns, mostly from younger tups, but there might be a 12 1/2 incher in there as we do try to get the horns from any old boys who go on to higher things.  I'll go and have a look. A friend had one for a birthday crook for her OH, so the pair might still be around.   We leave them so the inside falls out then the smaller ones can be used for buttons and jewellery (that's the plan - haven't had enough long winter evenings to start yet but I think they'll look lovely polished and set in silver ::)
If there's more than one I'll let you know Bert.  Is there a time limit to use them after the insides have come out?
