I've got a young sow (she's only a small sow - probably about 80kgs) and she's got an infected boob. She's weaned from her litter and I've been watching this teat carefully as its mishappen. Anyway, its clearly got a couple of abscesses in it and which have burst this morning and so I'm giving her some PenStrep. I'm jabbing her in the ham but am wondering if this is the best place and perhaps I should be going behind the ear? I'm using my Masterject so she's getting the dose but just want to be sure its penetrating the fat and getting into the muscle......although as I said, she's not a bit sow.
thanks folks.

at 80 kilos she wont be carrying a lot of fat that is a bit on the light side for a sow was it a mistake she was up the duff in the first place :farmer:

The masterject will get into the muscle Blinkers. It might need something a bit stronger than pen and strep though.
Good luck with her, let us know how she gets on.

thanks Julie S. I'll give her 3 days of PS and see how she gets on but then may have a word with the vet. I'm amazed that she's not feeling under the weather by it, but even when I squeezed it to eek out some pus, she wasn't bothered.......Bothered me though....yuk and ouch :P Will let you know how we get on

is the pus coming out of the nipple?

Fortunately not :) To the side and where I think she may have been bitten by an over zealous piglet ::)
