Pitstop being grey never looks clean for any lenght of time. Due to all this lovely weather and still being in his thick winter coat his hair was looking pretty matted. I use the dogs shedder to groom at this time of year as it is great for getting hair out. This morning I decided to give him a bath. Lucky for me he does enjoy a bath, no doubt by tomorrow he will have rolled in something horrible but for the momeant he looks lovely. last night I put on his harness and did a bit of long reining round the paddocks. he was such a good boy considering he has done nothing for more than a year. We did walk, trot, canter and rein back and he seem to enjoy himself. i am having an exercise carriage made by Hillam Carriage makers to get Rory and Pitstop driving. Pitstop did his back in a couple of years ago and its only in the past few months that he is now back to normal. he is a super Shetland, great with the grand children, worth his weight in gold as far as i am concerned. :horse:

It's amazing isnt it being able to bath them so early! Of course because it is so early you bath them and then they accelerate the shedding of the winter woollies all over you!
Mine had baths yesterday and today too! (could only face one a day)

would love her lovely mane colour, took pitstop in this evening to find he had a dust bath. Gave me one of his knowing looks as if to say I should have know better. ;D

i find it very therapautic getting out winter coats :D

I have just had a major grooming session with my shetland cross (using shedder) and turned the field white! Now have a lovely sleek looking pony. I also find grooming at this time of year theraputic, and anyone who does not have a shedder should get on, as they are the best!

the birds round here are making the most of me grooming my bunch

Me too Sabrina
swallow's nests inside the field shelter are lined with feathers from hens and pony 'fluff' and interwoven with hay and hair from tails and manes - they are like a work of art!

Will have to get a shedder. I am frantically brushing Dusty (grey section a) to shift her winter coat! Lol
She seems to be constantly mucky as well and as I am/was an inexperienced owner when I got her, I was worried I wasn't looking after her correctly. Another daft question to my farrier lol

Helen - get a shedder!! they are about £4 and unlike a brush don't clog up so you can just keep going! and going!

A shedder makes the job so easy ;D

Off to google..

Rubber glove cheapest method of all tho ;)

That reminds me Hellybee - I have a furminator somewhere, but used it one of the cats and the poor thing looked bald by the time I had finished :-\
-
oh no, poor puss cat :( for wooly winter unrugged coats i find it great, the rugged ponies are mostly shedding blade and curry comb. i think the teeth of the furminator are too long for them and theyre finer winter coat.
-
yearlings are hanging onto their winter coats and look like moth eaten rugs so time for the shedder and a bath if we get a good few days ;D
