Does anyone know of a pigproof temporary electric fence post? Our boar has taken to eating the normal plastic ones, which is not only costly to replace but makes the fence collapse every couple of days.
-
there must be something wanting in his diet for him to chew plastic have you checked his teeth or tusks :farmer:
-
I suspect it is more that he has woked out how to get the fence down. He plucks them out and tosses them through the air if they are easily uprooted and bites through them if they are secure. Have moved to metal poles with plastic isloating rings on.

The other option might be to knock in one or two wooden fence posts with the wee screw/nail on isolator clips ? That way he really can't pull them out ;) You can use the iron ones in between to save it getting slack.
I'm also wondering if you might need to up your voltage to your fence - it should be strong enough to be a deterent. Is something shorting it ? Or batteries maybe getting flat ? Might be time for the mains one :o :D
If it's a case of the grass being greener on the other side - maybe a change of scene (and paddock) for a while might fix it ?
Probably telling you how to suck eggs - but worth just checking ;)

How about running some electric wire up the posts for a day or two? That should stop the habit pretty quickly ;D
-
Just following this up as someone showed me a brilliantly simple but very effective solution: angle the posts outwards at about a 30 degree angle. For the boar to be able to get his jaws to the top part he presses against the wires... zap, problem solved.
-
but what about the bottom part ???????????

There is a product called a Live Pigtail Post, that is basically a live metal post insulated at the bottom.
You electrify it by running the wire / tape through the pigtail portion and then set the strands up the height by way of adjustable insulators.
Use our banner at the bottom of the page to go to our site and take a look at what I mean.
Thanks

That's pretty good. Can you get extra insulators so you can use several strands?
-
Hi,
Yes, they are called "adjustable insulators for metal posts" as per these: https://www.suppliesforsmallholders.co.uk/adjustable-insulator-for-metal-post-p-2681.html (https://www.suppliesforsmallholders.co.uk/adjustable-insulator-for-metal-post-p-2681.html)
Thanks

Could I ask a similar question? We have a fenced area (posts/mesh) and was going to put an electric wire at low level (there are a few holder things there already). But does it need to be wire or will pigs respect polyrope (we have lots of it)?
-
Wire, Polyrope or Tape are all fine - once the pigs get "trained" ie. get a few zaps they will respect the electric, and you will have trouble getting them to cross the fence line even if you remove the wire/rope/tape.
Thanks
