Was hoping someone had some info on where i can get my pigs slaughtered and butchered preferably at the same place in County Down.
-
Hello,
Closest to you is Stevensons in Cullybackey in Antrim (one of only two abattoirs in NI who deal with private individuals). Although they will not butcher the animal - you'll need them to get the carcass delivered to a butcher. If it's for your own consumption then you can get the butcher to butcher it for you, if it's to be sold on then you will need the consent of your local environmental health office first.
May well be easier to export the animal to the South. The South is far more geared up to private/small scale pig keeping enterprises. We contacted the environmental health officer in a neighbouring county in the South (in our case Leitrim) who put us in touch with a fully licenced abattoir who also provided butchery (and were licenced to export back to NI).

Cheers Gavin your for all your help. Is there much expense in exporting and importing back.
-
What type of pigs have you got relic? As a matter of interest.

Hello,
The export process is free from DARD however the paperwork must be signed off by a vet when they come out to inspect the animals prior to export. As such we incur a standard visit charge by our vet, in our case it's £40 (for the entire export).
The abattoir we use charges us €10 (Euro) to bring the carcasses to our butcher in the North. Our abattoir has an EEC export licence to do this. If the abattoir didn't have such a licence then we could only use the pigs for our own consumption and not sell them.

It's really hard to get Tamworths in Ireland, I had to search for an age before I found two sellers with different bloodlines. We've got Belleview Glen (Boar), and Golden rose, Ruby ( + soon Rita) gilts. I assume you're getting a Rita bloodline from gavin. Great pigs the Tammies, you'll really enjoy them.

Hello,
You're one of 14 in the book. If I'm guessing right you have "aka" in your email address.
Anyway the choice is from Ruby, Rita & Lucky Lass for girls. If you're one after a breeding pair then there's also the choice of Jasper and Ranger boars.
All are fine, most are running about ducking under the electric fencing !
