One of my sows had a bit of blood in her urine on Tuesday morning and was off her food so I bought her in and phoned the vet. She came out and thought it was a urinary infection or possibly loosing her piglets as she was 5 weeks off farrowing. Dosed her up and gave me enough for 5 days. After a couple of days no improvement so called vet out again and changed the anti biotic. When I checked her later she couldn't get up onto her back legs, so I strawed her nice and snug and got a load of water down her, checked before bed at 1 gave her more water and sat with her for a bit.
Went out this morning to find her dead, down a good sow and a litter of piglets had better days. :'(

Not had a chance to speak to the vet she was not working today, will pop in and see her on Monday.
Thankfully she wasn't in any pain but so frustrating to loose a good sow when it just seemed like a routine problem.
Thanks for the kind words,we live and learn.

Is it worth getting a post mortem done to find out what happened?
-
Awful thing to happen especially when its sudden. PM definetly worth getting done just for peace of mind if nothing else. Thoughts with you

Spoke to the vet this morning and she wasn't surprised. Thought most likely was that the piglets had died and that had poisoned her, septicaemia presumably. Will put that down to experience and hope not to come across it again. :(

Oh what a bloomin' shame - so sorry. It always seems to happen to the best ones too, doesn't it. At least you've been given a reason for the loss which helps in a small way.
