Title: A sad loss to the pig world
Post by: HappyHippy on March 08, 2012, 07:34:01 pm
I've just heard through Tudful Tamworths (via the wonder of facebook) that sadly Nick Hunkin died today.
I was never fortunate enough to meet him in person, but I know he's done a lot for pigs & keepers over the years and will be missed by all who did know him.
My thoughts go out to anyone affected by this loss and all Nick's family - RIP Nick.
Karen x

Thoughts and best wishes to his wife Liz, so sad, Nick will be hugely missed on the show circuit this year. Liz Shankland (Tudful Tamworths) is organising an interbreed memorial trophy in Nick's name, to be awarded at the Bath & West show, if anyone would like to contribute.

yes he was a larger than life character and had it it not been for his encouragement and guidance pig classes and showing would not have progressed in Scotland a sad loss to the pig world and both Lillian and myself feel honoured to have been in his company and known him and Liz  :farmer:

Nick was our insperation in doing pig demos, always helpful in the ring and a fantastic friend to all who knew him, he will be sorely missed by all. Nick was looking forward to the royal highland show having pig classes once more and being our commentator.

You're absolutely right - a real inspiration, particularly to newcomers to showing. One of the kindest, most generous people I've ever had the privilege to meet. This picture is how I, and other pig people, will always remember him- doing what he did best, having a laugh and a joke whilst commentating at shows across the UK.

Nick was our judge at Newark last year and placed my pair of GOS 4th in the interbreed (an amazing result out of about a dozen pairs as GOS never do well in pairs as there are generally never two alike!) and i always will remember that, i loved to listen to his commentaries which were funny and informative. He will be very missed on the show circuit. With best wishes to his wife & family.

Nick's funeral has been arranged for Thursday, March 22, 12 noon, at the Church of St George, Hinton St George, Somerset. Appropriately, there will be a wake to follow at the local pub - Nick would have approved wholeheartedly!

Very sad to hear this.  Nick was very welcoming to everyone he met and he will be hugely missed around the shows.  Love to his wife Liz xx
