Where can I buy a smallholding of 2+ acres with 3-4 bedrooms in England for under 300K?
I know there are lots of places in Wales and Scotland, but just wondered about England :)

In England you'd be very lucky indeed to find your request anywhere, other than in areas that have 'problems' as you've already discovered. An option if you can fulfill the criteria is an Agricultural occupancy type property where somebody in your family has to be employed in agriculture in some way.
Around here in North Yorkshire where i am your ideal spot start at around £500k as its horsey country, you might get something relatively cheaper in the Yorkshire dales £3-400k or out towards the coast (North Yorks Moors) but be careful planning is a nightmare.

Cornwall would be a good bet. Also some parts of Devon if you don't mind doing some work on the property. Primelocation is a good website to find what you are looking for. You can do a search that specifies that you want a property with "acres". I have just done a search and have found 5 properties that meet your criteria. There is one near Bodmin that has 5 cares and is already a registered smallholding!
Happy hunting.

We managed it in Cambs, 6 acres and 4 bedrooms for less than half that!
But we have AOC and a house you'd struggle to get a mortgage on due to a few structural issues. We found it at auction http://www.cheffins.co.uk (http://www.cheffins.co.uk) and we've had to spend some more getting luxuries like central heating and electrics sorted.
