After the most stressful move imaginable we are now officially in our new home. We had to transfer all the heavy stuff via lorry -> land rover/trailer -> over extensive fields -> back of house so it took a while, especially as the day i had booked the lorry for, the trailer we were due to borrow had suddenly got a flat tyre! Then the neighbours at our old place started kicking off because we put our rubbish in their wheelie bins (lined up on the pavement) a few hours before they were due to be emptied, one of our neighbours deciding to take glass jam jars out and smash them all over the pavement and start swearing at me (not a wise move given the mood I was in)...it was a nightmare, a move from hell. Lets not go there anymore. I did laugh finally when the other neighbour told me she was going to call the police about the fact I had put rubbish in her bin. I advised her to crack on.
This morning woke up, mist on the hills, faint smell of wood from the burner still lingering, nothing but birds singing and a few distant moos from a hungry cow. Came downstairs, lit the fire (thought I would treat myself, it is free after all) and had some tea. Just got to unpack a house full of boxes now!
Thank goodness we are out of suburbia. Never, ever again will Iive in it.

Congrats and enjoy! Every valley/dale/villiage has its loons but I advise copious niceness and humbleness as you might find out in a years time ,as I did yesterday, that you are related!!! ;D. .. AND sometimes the loons turn out to be great friends (and visa versa!).
What are the chances - we move from the middle of Birmingham to a remotish valley in North Wales and find out that we are distantly related to the local family who are always at war with each other!! Luckily I have taken pains not to get involved or take sides - boy am I glad about that!
Where are you? Hope you are having as glorious a day as we are having here - Enjoy your day and new life!

We are in the Surrey Hills now, so not remote but very rural where we are. My brother-in-law went down to the pub on Sunday (he was waiting for us to get back with another lorry load) and said it was the friendliest pub he had EVER been in. Someone had stood him a pint within 5 minutes of arriving there and he watched the rugby mainly with five other guys. Said he had made more friends in an hour then he had made in London in five years (bit of an exageration i expect but still...must get down there and sample the ale). Its very foggy here still, can hardly see past the end of the garden.

Lucky you with a pub. No I expect he wasnt exagerating - we had met more neighbours BEFORE we moved in than in 7 years in our old house deep in suburbia. The weekend before we moved we went to a pub in the next villiage and the waitress guessed who we were based on our descriptions and welcomed us, particulalry my 9 yr old as she is a dinner lady in the school he was due to join!!!!! Its fantastic as long as you dont crave privacy and isolation! Knowledge (gossip!!) is currency here, so you may well find all sort of fact finding visits to your door (although if you go to the pub that will do it.) - Get the kettle on!

I used to live in a smallish village, which was wonderful - as you describe, gossipy, many related - the local bobby said that the best thing was that, although there were still nutters, at least you knew who they were ;D
Good luck in your new life :bouquet:

Enjoy!!!!!
Yes, we know everyone living within a 5 mile radius and even a quick walk can turn into an epic journey because everyone stops you for a chat!! Have everyones phone number and there are always offers of help. You were lucky if people gave you a smile where I lived before .

Oh just re-read (I am the loon here!) - bin ranters and jar smashers were at old place, not new neighbours!!! Still as Rosmary says - there WILL be bin ranters and jar smashers everywhere, but at least you will know them!

As somebody who grew up in a village (and has only briefly lived in towns) - Id find out who's related as quickly as you can. Have fun!
-
And never say anything faintly derogatory about anyone, as you are absolutely guaranteed to be speaking to their sister or their cousin or their aunt ;)

id second the last two posts, my ex had 34 members of her family in her village....
