Title: Spring is definitely here....
Post by: Anke on February 28, 2012, 05:33:24 pm
The bees were out in full force today from both of my hives!

I have a willow arch over the gate into the garden, and it was buzzing like no tomorrow.... I also saw a bumble bee bumbling through the garden.... and digging in short sleeves... let's hope it stays that way....

I had to take my big jacket off when I walked Zip this morning (a first). The ducks are laying eggs and doing the usual ducky spring things and the goats kids were out playing all day - fantastic for this time of year.

Needed two egg boxes today to collect them all. Last week was just a couple in one.

Working in Banff today, watched small waves lazily drift towards the shore,
sun clad cliffs in the distance, and a warm breeze, to top it off.
Wonderful.  :)

We've had snow drops and daffs down this end of the country for what seems like ages - but now the primroses are bursting through and some of the hedges are showing new growth leaves so there is a slight green hazy tinge  ;D ;D

I was picking up poo in the yard last night, went to scoop with my shovel and bucket when the poo moved and looked at me :o :o It was a huge toad!
We have primroses and the first violets out in the hedges and the honeysuckle, always first, is in leaf. :) :)

Yes - first red nose of the year and I saw the first lizzard of the year as I cooled off with a drink on the patio ( after 3 hours digging !!!!). Limousin France.

Think I dug up a spring yesterday !
I dug a soakaway for kitchen and bathroom waste water- turf off, topsoil- clay then sand and water. I guess I just hit the water table.
I filled the bottom of the hole with stones that the pigs had dug up. Unfortunately that meant going into their paddock area with a bucket. Bucket = food so I had their noses in the bucket until I distracted them with wallnuts.  Several buckets of stones cost nearly a sack of walnuts.

I turned over a plank in the hen run this morning so the hens could feast on the slugs and worms underneath. As I did so, out ran first one then another field mouse and I saw a tiny round nest made from hay. Looking inside very carefully I saw it was lined with sheeps wool and nestled in that were four tiny, pink babies, the size of a broad bean seed. I put the plank back carefully, I hope the parents return :) :)

Little blighters aren't shy are they? Just sit there in the field looking at me just two foot away, then his pal comes along and sits down and starts stuffing his little face looking at me too.

Hmmm. Just wait till they meet my cat  ;)

A field I grazed hard in winter which was mossy under the grass has now turned from brown to a fine green beize...
