Please make this very important vote tonight with your lightswitch.
It is at 8.30pm, here is the link to the UK site about it -
*28 March 2009
*Be part of a massive global event. Possibly the world's greatest
environmental event ever! On Saturday 28 March 2009 at 8.30pm, we want
individuals, businesses, companies, schools and iconic buildings across
Scotland to turn off their lights for one hour - WWF's Earth Hour.
WWF’s Earth Hour already has support in over 1800 cities in 80
countries. Here in Scotland, lights will go out in every major city and
on some of the country's most iconic buildings including: Edinburgh
Castle, the Forth Rail Bridge, the Scottish Parliament and many, many more.

i'm cunningly using that hour to put my clock forward, so i'll be doing my bit - all be it jsut for a minute!!!
-
Didn't see this in time but my lights were all off for 6 hours earlier today when I was out in the garden. Does that count? ;D
-
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions! I did mean to do this but I was watching "Mamma Mia" and forgot. I've just tortured Dan with my version of "Dancing Queen" and a quick chorus of "Waterloo" - what a fab film!
-
Ooh, you lucky thing. Sandy and I went to see it at the MacRobert and it was terrific! Would love to see it again. I hope the stage version comes somewhere near - I'll go to that too.
-
Only just read this so its a bit late now :( Will try to do it at some point.

Hopefully doesn't give burglars an opportunity, ha ha ha.

We just used it as a wonderful excuse to have a candlelit dinner!

they switched the lights off at linlithgoa palace to support this - but because they are not prepared to pay someone overtime to go in and switch them back on they will remain off tonight and tomorrow - so that should make up for anyone who forgot!!
-
Obviously not run by the Council then, they normally encourage double time payments...

well, i did my bit for earth hour last night!!!
we had a power cut about 9.30 last night, lasted just over an hour.
Mrs SB was delighted, since we moved out to our place in the country, she always fancied a power cut, with the fire roaring, candles out, wee glass of wine and nothing to worry about.
Sadly it was too warm to have the fire on last night, but the candles all got lit, the wine did indeed get drunk and it was all very cosy. I even got my wind up radio and torch out to give us some entertainment
sadly, reality returned and ages was spent resetting all the clocks/timers in the house, also, the unexpected power shorteage caused a few problems for my PC and i had to phaff about with that for a while to get it working again.
still, fun while it lasted! and good for the planet too!

i think it was badly timed as it was Scotland v Holland at the same time so that two nations that would turn them off lol

Power cuts are great with kids...they just love the sense of adventure. No T.V. and plenty of time for telling stories....candles flickering, fire roaring...what could be better?
-
I can remember the three day week - mid 70's? - when the electricity was off for periods of time. We had a coal fire and I remember sitting by the fire, with candles lit, playing cards with my parents and making toast on the fire. Great fun.
-
Ditto. Do you remember the sugar shortage around the same period?
-
How are people like me supposed to survive without electricity if it goes off again? I have gas central heating but electricity switches it off and on. I have no other from of heating. Do you think the situation warrants getting a little gas stove.
(Oops, sorry, just realised how stupid that was - I could live in my motor-home for a while couldn't I? That's a very good reason for not selling it! :-*)

I remember the three day week well. I was working at a factory that made the then leading edge industrial computer cases, they were bigger than telephone boxes...not home pc's .. they were just something that existed on sci fi films etc. I hated it ...I left for work in the dark at 6am , pitch black everywhere, started work at 8am and came home in pitch black at 8pm ....then sat in the dark and gloom with just one or two candles ( remember the candle shortage ?) oh and yes I remember the sugar shortage too...I saw three or four standup fights over the stuff ...One involved about about nine or ten women pulling eachother to bits in the supermarket !!!! others involved men kicking the cr*p out of eachother in the street.....crazy .There was a couple that lived next to a friend of mine, who got arrested for hoarding over a ton of it !!! Now that is ludicrous enough in itself , but the people in question didn't even use it ???? nor were they selling it!! AAAAhhh the good ole days .... ::) ::) ::)
cheers
