Title: which type of tins??
Post by: Sunnybank on February 22, 2012, 12:35:17 pm
Hi everyone,
I am about to invest in some new cooking tins for cakes, thinking of muffins to start with and then gradually replace all my old tins. which would you buy /or do you use - silicone or metal??
Have been looking on ebay and also in Lakeland and Tesco, Big price differences, but just not sure about the silicone idea, and putting it in the oven :)
look forward to your comments

I was equally sceptical of the silicon, envisaging melted rubber all over the oven. But I have to say that didnt happen, and this was bread cooked at 240 degrees c. So really up to you.....tho my new worry with silicon is maybe some kind of transfer of particles into the food - but then I thought the same about non stick!

good quality silicone stuff is awesome the cheap stuff is shite!!!

good quality silicone is expensive so most of my stuff is good midrange metal/nonstick stuff and mainly does what its supposed too!!!

My advice is to on tins is to buy the best and heaviest you can afford. Cheap ones won't dishwash (go rusty!) and warp in very hot ovens. HTH

I'll second that - the heaviest is the best - I bought quite expensive bread tins a few years ago but my grandmother's bread tins are far superior.  I go to car boots and the like but have never found any really old ones there but I'll keep looking.
