Title: Diatomaceous earth - online suppliers?
Post by: ellied on February 17, 2012, 09:24:09 pm
Just wondered if anyone had researched or found a good online supplier a my local stockists don't seem to have it.  I remember a worrying story about some bought online that might have been fake, brick dust or something? ???  Can't remember exactly but thought the collective responses might be useful on genuine retailers, good prices, reliable delivery etc..

Not sure how much I'll need for 8 chooks either, the only container I have seen seemed quite small and might not give them all a good dustbath..

Thanks

SPR do it and I've found them a good company to deal with, so I'd trust their stuff was kosher.

Hi Ellied, I bought a huge sack of it from Ebay (it was the same price as a small sack!), and you're welcome to as much as you like, pro-rata for the cost plus postage, or collection from Grangemouth if you ever pass that way?

Just let me know if that's of any interest.

Cheers!

Hi David - are you coming to the AGM?  I could do with some if you have enough to spare. :-*

Unlikely at this stage Annie, but if I do, I'll bring some with me.

I can picture it now: "A Smallholder was arrested last night for selling plastic bags of white powder from the boot of his car in a dark pub car park. Police say that the powder has an estimated street value of, darn, about £2.50".  ;D

Sounds great Womble, but I have never been to Grangemouth and no plans in that direction at present - I'm away to Italy on Monday for 5 days but fly back in around midnight so a diversion on the way home is unlikely too ;)

If you have enough for Annie and myself you could give it to her and I'll pick up my share when I get home, just let me know the cost.  Or let me know where you got it from if it's an ebay retailer rather than private sale? and I'll go have a look as there is a friend staying here who could sign for deliveries..

Cameron, I'd love to put my name up for some if it's not all spoken for yet - once I'll be back driving. My leg's still in a Beckham boot for at least another 4 weeks though - or are you ever coming up our way?  :&>

If we can get a connection from Cameron to me, I can do a run up to Fife - you and Ellie.  Or if I get some from David I can do the same - need to agree cost of it between you, happy to hand over cash and get back when i deliver

That would be lovely, Annie, cash on hand should be fine from my side, too and a visitor would be nice, haven't seen you for years  :&>. I'm so frustrated just now, sitting here, waiting for the weeks to pass....

OK, might see David on Friday at CSSA AGM, but if not if I get post codes from them privately I'll sort something out.  Might wait till Ellie is back from her exam in Rome though.

Hi Cameron,
that's a great offer - there's no rush if next week would suit you better. I was just thinking of ordering some more for when I'm fit again. Just let me know what day's best for you and how much it is. Thanks again!
That.s no reason why you can't come and see me, Annie, when you are in the area!  :&>

I bought some off the ebay and it was red and smelled like brick dust,my step father worked in the Stewartby brickworks so I know the smell ;) ,the seller said it is not brick dust and it depends upon where it is mined?! ???

After using it for vent lice on the hens in my untreated shed it did not work, not diatom at all.Not pleased. >:( I would sooner pay a little more to know I am getting the right product! :chook:

Cameron brought his over yesterday and his is red. He said it worked great on his last really bad infestation. I do remember a discussion on here a while ago that some Diatom is died for a purpose but I don't remember what it was. Probably some sellers do cheat there.... :&>

I had a sniff on one of your reddish bags, Cameron - thanks again for bringing them over! -it does not smell of anything, certainly not bricks and the consistency is the same as the grey stuff I had last, like talc powder. And as you said it works a treat it must be the real stuff. :&>

Hi All,

Sorry for not replying - I've been too busy out in the garage grinding up bricks (it's SO hard to get the colour right!)  ;D

Seriously though, I WILL be at the AGM tomorrow night, and will bring a few bags of powder with me. Just promise me please that if I get arrested in the carpark, one of you will stick up for me?

remember diatom is also used in foodstuffs so red maybe the stuff to be used in the  food industry as i know i would rather eat something looking red than it looking like a dull colour. maybe or maybe not the case?

Hi I'm back and catching up slowly - brought home a nasty lurgy so have been staggering out to the chooks in my pjs and back to bed but am upright again today which is good..

Thanks for the offers/advice - I guess Annie has some DE for me from Womble if neither was arrested in the carpark?  And I see NFD has what she needs so I can have as much as there is spare ;)  Just let me know how much I owe and to whom, I don't want to be in debt too long and the chooks could do with me getting on with the sandpit and a few running repairs aswell now I notice ::)

Hiya, Annie took 6kg in total, and to my knowledge didn't get arrested.  She gave me the cash (£2/kilo in the end), so you should just settle up with her when you see her.

Reminds me of my uni days, a friend was a herbalist  ::), she stopped next to me on her motor bike to pass me a bag or herbal tea!!!!! ::)          It WAS tea but I worried in case I was being watched....I later worked for Nat Drug Helpline and  knew a local boy got arrested for selling bags of baking powder..he thought he had something else too!! ::)
