Title: First 2012 Kidding - First C-Section
Post by: Brucklay on February 15, 2012, 08:54:03 pm
After all the waiting it was all looking good for kids today - then things slowed down and I decided to call the vet out - he couldn't get the kid out so had to do a c-section. OH was off work feeling really under the weather which was a blessing really as he did all the water carrying. I found it all a bit daunting but thankfully the vet managed to first get a wee boy out and after what seemed a lot of digging about get the problem girls out - amazingly both burst into life and OH was then on kid duty, keeping them warm while the vet did all all the stitching and I was on holding duty. Thankfully mum had accepted her beautiful little kids, they had both had a couple of feeds, once I sent them in the right direction and although she must be sore she seems quite content. Just have to hope she don't get an infection, that the drugs work for her and she pulls through - being positive as she was in good health. What an ordeal I feel totally drained but have enjoyed a visit and those squeeky kids cry's and seeing the little girl already trying to climb onto mum's back - they do say the ups and downs - they are named Dusk and Domino - off to get a bite to eat before later check as 2 more due any time soon!!

Never ceases to amaze how quickly anim als recover from a C section....... great opportunity to separate mum & kids !!
Just don't let her jump or run around for a few days.... the inner stitches need to do their job.... so keep her in  sight of her friends.

Have to say... a dramatic start to kiddin g !!!!!

Congratulations!!  As you say, there are always ups and downs with livestock keeping ....and although most of the tme things go to plan, we have to accept that there are times when they don't!!  Thankfully you have two girls, and hopefully mum will be feeling better soon.

Well an UP today - off to the pen to do breakfasts to find Prue had given birth to twin boys without any fuss (she did that 2 years ago went down to the house to clean up just in case back 10-15mins later she was all done and dusted!!) so mega ordeal yesterday - no fuss today, what's on the cards tomorrow? All kids are feeding well and keeping a close eye on Paige she is only slightly picking at food - but I bet she feels sore today - she like's ready grass so will pop out and get some in case she'll nibble that

Mays it was the Strichen vet I've always used for the goats but the actual vet was an Irish lad who's a locum - he said he's done 8 c-sections on sheep at the weekend so at least he was in practice and did seem to take the hygiene seriously and thankfully I went and got some ready grass and Paige ate some of that so hopefully I'll be able to keep her strength up

Did the vet leave you with some pain killers for her?
Round here they tend to only give them if you ask especially, make me cross cos it has to be really sore >:(

Hi Colliewoman - he didn't leave painkiller - he used metacam by injection, he left antibiotic which I did ask about but I was in a bit of a panic to be perfectly honest and not thinking straight - shes nibbling the ready grass still and did nibble some of her hard feed - but not being her greedy self but at least its something - I'll give them a ring

Our vets aren't keen on too much pain relief..the theory being a little pain stops them cavorting around doing things they shouldn't be doing and giving the wound, stitches a chance to heal.
Just a thought. Congratulations on all your new babies.  I'm getting excited about mine but not due to early April.

I see the point LouiseG - maybe they are right - she has been subdued but still nibbling, getting her jabs, feeding the kids and sleeping lots with the kids which can only do her good - we'll hopefully be having a few lambs when your kidding hope it goes well for you
