Title: locating a smallholding...
Post by: hjbatchelor on March 23, 2009, 02:25:53 pm
Dreaming of setting up a smallholding may be one thing but locating somewhere is a whole different kettle of fish.

Where is best to look for land/smallholdings with accomadation. I have found one or two good sites (greenshifters)... but theres not much on the net.

Any help and/or links to quality sources of smallholdings would be fab.

Thanks in advance,

Harry.

Where abouts would you want to locate to and how much land would you want?

We found that quite a few properties in Normandy France, and indeed all over, where land isn't an issue if you just want 3-5 acres. Likewise in Bulgaria and Greece. I guess it all depends on your personal circumstances and preferences.   www.daltons.co.uk might be worth a look if you want a going concern..... Ree

Try crofts in the outer Hebrides.  you can look at Western Isles Properties.

my advise would be to contact several estate agents in th earea where you live (or where you want to live)

tell them what you are after, your budget etc - and let them keep an eye out for something suitable on your behalf (some work better than others)

they might also know of a property with no land but adjacent to land that you might be able to lease of the landowner (especially if it isn't being used)

1st step would be to contact the landowner and see if he's open to leasing it

have you got a local smallhoders association, contact them, they might be able to give you some pointers/local info - you may even find one has more land than he can manage and would be willing to share a bit in return for your time effort
