Title: Poultry feed prices - let's keep track
Post by: Womble on January 16, 2012, 05:47:29 pm
Just an idea, how about a rolling thread so we can keep track of how much we're all paying for feed? My hope is that this will build up to be a useful reference source in time. If nothing else, we'll be able to look back in five years time and say "only £10 a bag!, those were the days eh?"  ;)

So, no discussion on this thread (plenty of room for that elsewhere), just your location, feed type bought, quantity and amount paid.

I'll start:

Stirling (Carrs Billington).
Standard layers pellets, 25kg, £9.45 ea
Mixed corn, 25kg, £9.98 ea
Whole wheat, 25kg, £7.88 ea

Marriages Layer Pellets (GM free) £7.60 for 20kg bag)
Mixed corn - um, about the same.
If you order a pallet load (tonne), it's delivered free. They'll do a mixed pallet, so I get sheep pellets and pig food from them as well.

With the cost of diesel plus the cost of my time, I reckon it's worth it. Plus I'm not tempted to buy "stuff" in a shop.

Bert - did you try your nearest farms? I just cheekily asked and they have been selling me their own produced wheat for 4.50 / 20 kg for years now. If your neighbours don't do that they might be ble to give you a hint towards a farm that sells on feed - many do! :&>

Same as Kegs - Farm and Pet Place for Marriages & A&P Waterfowl growers (10.99). I have also got some bedding from them. I don't even know the nearest place I can buy Marriages, let alone the waterfowl pellets so I reckon the delivery charges are cheaper than my petrol (and very quick). Did a shop around on-line and Farm and Pet place was the cheapest I found but if anybody knows anywhere cheaper....

I buy organic in bulk from HJLea Oaks. Prices have just shot up to £525 a ton but it's still much cheaper than any organic feed in the shops here in North Wales. I don't use that much myself but share with friends and advertise it on local Facebook groups. Well worth doing if you have the storage space.

Don’t expect them to come back down to what they were either. Wholesale wheat and barley is easing back but leaving farmers making a loss. A lot won’t grow as much next year so there will be a shortage in 12 months. We are looking at cutting our barley acerage by 40%.
Title: Re: Poultry feed prices - let's keep track
Post by: chrismahon on June 30, 2022, 10:29:44 am
Seems UK prices are a bit lower than here. We have just seen a small increase but they are now €18.25 for a 25Kg bag (standard size here) of Sanders layer pellets. Converting that to £ and a 20kg bag works out at  £12.70. A lot depends where you buy them from though. The gardening stores are more expensive and if there are no competitors nearby, as was the case with an independent store in the Dordogne, you can pay double. You can also add €5 if you want to buy without chemical colourants, or 'yolk enhancers' as they call them.

When we left the UK we were buying Smallholder layers for under £7 a bag, 500 Kg at a time, but that was 10 years ago. The prices in the Dordogne came as a real shock, doubly so because we couldn't sell eggs without a business licence.

OK, I don't want to start or continue a debate, since there are other threads for that. But since this thread has been running for a while now, there's enough data to do something meaningful with it. The attached graph is £/kg for layers pellets, taken just from my posts on this thread. It's going to be interesting to see what happens next!

20 July, Carrs Billington Stirling. 25kg layers pellets £13.25

(Note, that's the same as I paid for a 20kg sack at McCaskies last month. Something has changed, as they never used to be all that different.)

I think there maybe and element of 'let's cash in on this' and they are putting prices up because the market expects it. Problem is, can you buy anywhere else cheaper? Price rises here are subject to government checks, so you can't inflate prices unnecessarily. I think the UK's 11% (it will be) inflation is largely due to greed and it could all spiral into chaos unless held down by legislation. So what is your pro-Brexit Government doing about it?

Prices here haven't changed since the minor increases earlier. We all know there are grain shortages and expect a little bit of an increase.

Are they the Chicken Choice ones? I normally get those at our store at the same price - £10.75 for 20 kg but the own brand is cheaper and I'm trying to cut back on feed costs. My favourite brand is Marriages but round here it is really pricey and they don't stock it at our two nearest stores.

It's a good price for the own brand stuff but the birds don't like it as much. It doesn't smell so appealing either. You get what you pay for I guess  ::)

Um not sure what the chicken choice ones means sorry. Duffields superlayer pellets is all it says on the bag. I buy it from Pet Superstore so they don't do an own brand as they aren't a normal aggricultural feed supplier. If they did I would probably do a 50/50 mix as my feeders hold about 15kg of food at each too up. I'm trying to keep my feed costs down too as I've not put up the price on the eggs that I sell. It's not so bad during the warmer months as I've always got a spare veg bed that I can pop something in to supplement their layers pellets

Down here prices seem to have dropped slightly.
Sanders layers €15.30 +5.5% vat per 25Kg
Sanders rearers €18.15 +vat
At last weeks exchange rate that is £11.13 for 20Kg layers and £13.20 rearers which contains so much stuff, including probiotics, so I think is good value.
BUT, the £ slumped over two cents in a week for whatever reason and most importantly the forecast here is the worst grain harvest for 40 years due to excessive rain in the North and Central regions of France. So these prices are only going to rise again.
