Title: Bacon
Post by: mad h on January 06, 2012, 04:39:57 pm
Hi,

Here I am sitting in sunny Spain, and at the moment, not a care in the world.
I love living in Spain, and don't miss much from home, (well, U.K. will always be home) except decent bacon. So I have decided to have a go at dry curing some this weekend. Wish me luck. I have carefully read the information given on this site, and am really keen to get started. Sooo excited

 I must be mad.

I will let you know how it works out.

Regards

Ditto, wouldnt mind a spell in sunny Spain at the moment. Very wet at present in West Wales. Good luck with the curing, let us all know how you get on.

Best of luck, do let us know how it goes.  I've been told to dry cure only in winter as it's too warm for it in our so-called summer - so I will be intrigued to know how it goes for you with your lovely weather!

We have the same problem in France getting hold of decent bacon. The French do it in a roll like salami, which is great if you are on a diet as it is cut very thin and is virtually fatless (and expensive).
We used to ask our family to bring it over, usually around 40 packs at a time as my hubby is a great bacon eater. Now, we buy it from our fish and chip man who comes to our area once a fortnight in his van. I get a 2kg catering pack and repack it when I get home. It usually lasts us the fortnight if OH doesnt have bacon rolls for breakfast too many times a week. It works out as cheap as Tesco and is better quality than the multipack one I use to get, so we are sorted.
Im sure though that if your venture is successful, you will be making new friends for miles around, as they will all want to sample (and perhaps buy) your wares.

Good Luck!!

Three chickens in the garden is more than some people on here have.  Read the top of the page - aspiring smallholders - that's us.  I have goats not chickens in my garden but that's all.

Mad H,

I have been on this site for a year now and only have a cat and dog so don't let the lack of livestock worry you.

There are some very knowledgeable people on here, only too eager to give their information, and I have been making good use of them for when I do get some livestock in the future.

In addition there are always other things you can join in on such as food e.g. your bacon request, crafts, land management, wildlife. The list goes on.

I am sure you will enjoy it.
Sally (wishing I was in sunny Spain now)
