Title: Overdue sow!
Post by: dixie on March 19, 2009, 01:25:23 pm
Hi everyone,  my sow was due 14th march, but still no piglets today! she was in with the boar from Nov 9th, came into heat Nov 17th, serviced I think Nov 19th. No sign of heat 21 days later nor 21 days aftert hat, so I assumed the date would be 14th March?  any ideas, how overdue can she go or am I being dim and missed something? she has been bagged up, has a redder/ prominent vulva and has become a bit grumpy!! for the last week! thanks!!

Our GOS  sow is always at least a week late.  Dont worry, nature knows best.

Hi, our sow farrowed on Friday evening, she had a litter of 11! All went well apart from one had a hernia and had to be put to sleep! The others are very fit and healthy! :D

sausagesandcash - called the vet to put him to sleep, expensive I know, but decided thats how I wanted to deal with it! What would everyone else have done? out of interest?

Exactly the same as you and let the vet do it! Sorry about your loss and hope the others are well.

Sorry about the dead one but well done on a litter of 10. They'll be a handful! Two handfuls, I suppose

I was wondering too, have no experience of it yet. I know that years ago it would have involved a tied hessian sack and a river, but i'm glad we've moved on from that, on so mant different levels.

I had to kill a puppy a few years back.  The bitch had chewed the cord too far down and some of it's innards too - I couldn't get a hold of it to stop her, it was her first litter and the first breech puppy.  She just got over anxious.  Sorry if its too much info.  No time to call vet, had to do the decent thing, smothered it and sang it to sleep with lullabies till it stopped breathing.  Will never forget that puppy - she was given the name of Phoenix. Sorry, still in tears when i think of it.
