hope all of you in northern climates are holding out against the wind...
eldest son (11) saw the forecast this morning and said "and that's why i don't want to move to Scotland!!!"
he'll come round in the end (when we're there probably!!!)
-
i heard reports on radio4 of 130mph gusts :o
keep safe!!

day off school tell him!!! here in fife all schools were closed at lunch time, and i was kicked out of college just after 11
hairy ride home - branches dropping all over the road. thankfully all the animals are doing ok - i forsee an early night though.
hope you are all safe :)
-
have tried the you get lots of snow days and other reasons for a day off trick and he says that's rubbish he likes school...
he's just being difficult, my other 3 are very excited to be heading north...
we have winds of a mere 30-40mph and that's enough fun for me today!!!
-
It feels like the house is about to blow down. Took me two and a half hours to get home from Edinburgh today, normally a half hour journey. Not fun.
Wonder if the sheep will blow away?
-
Our lights are flickering, so a power cut is highly likely :(
We've nailed the loose bit of shed roof which was flapping - everything battened down now, just got to wait for it to be over ::) Hoping around 9pm tonight, from what the forecast said

I think their centre of gravity is too low, combined with weight and wooliness. None of our animals seem in the least concerned - ponies were a bit spooked by stuff blowing around. At least it's been dry.
Be glad when it dies down though
-
now have visions of low flying sheep.... :sheep: :sheep: :sheep:
-
My chicken shed window blew in - just nailed it back in. Water getting too close for comfort to kennels so have sandbagged them. Will check before bed and take them into conservatory if needed ::) ::).
-
I am concerned by how much the trees around my house are moving but have fingers crossed. Animals all safely tucked away except Vaila the heifer who has found a nice sheltered bit of the field, although she was seen chasing hay around earlier! Thank goodness for the coal fire - nice and cosy inside!
-
I must have eaten a pound of hay while filling haynets tonight ;D Need a glass of something to clear my throat...

Now there's a good idea! Have some nice cold pink stuff in fridge. Will go nicely with the log burning stove and some telly I think. ;D

Well it looks as if the river is coming into the field >:(, we managed to get one lot into a safe corridor in the lower field, but the Shetlands' field doesn't have anything where we can pen them in... so just hope they see sense and move out of the way, it's usually not deep, just the river takes a shortcut through the field...
So far polytunnel still standing (better be it's got about 50 bales of hay in it!)... and only a short power cut earlier this afternoon... at least the snow is gone!
The big trees are swaying a lot... but too far away from our house for any damage...
-
Goats a bit spooked, chooks doing high-speed, unintentional crossings of the yard :D Two drakes fighting, which I've never seen, so perhaps it's getting them ratty too. So much rain the beck is too fast for them to swim in. Anyway, poultry and goats all in respective houses now.
Rosemary, that's the best excuse for a glass of something I've heard for a long time :D Trouble is, I'd have to drive to the shops......might have to stick with tea :)
Anke, I think they'll keep out of the way, mine sheep always have :-*
Hmmm, now our lights are flickering :P
-
La la la la la la la Not listening to anything about trees. An avenue on both sides of Leylands 40 feet high is not what I want to think about right now. Lalalalalalalalalala Can't here you. ;D
-
Oh wow, hope it all calms down soon!
I'm waay down south and very sheltered, but even so I've had a slab of (not-yet-put-together) dog kennel flip across the garden, and the rain is p*ssing into my porch/lean to.
Luckily I've just filmed it to email the landlord....
-
Well river has burst its banks.. and yes the sheep were marooned on the wrong side... fortunately we managed to get them through the water onto the other side with the full moon for light, no torches needed, wet feet for everybody concerned but hopefully they will not try and go back...
No power cut, so light and milking machine working - but it sounds as if the roof of the goatshed is lifting off... (hopefully not, it's pretty wel constructed), goats a bit spooked though.
It should calm down soon!
-
After last play with the collie pup I went to check the sheep shelter and it's getting worse here - struggling to open gates etc and walk!! and yes it was flapping - roped down now and sheep in top corner saying why did I bother!! Hopefully over by midnight - hope your all ok

Sorry to here aout all the wind up in Scotland. My daughters a pilot due to take off from Aberdeen shortly, always worry about her in windy weather. :(

She'll be fine, good team of ATCs up thre - my pals Mike and Philippa for two of them! ;D

We are getting it now, the old house is shaking a bit but at least ours are night winds so we have nothing to do outside.Hope they are gone by morning.
-
Cannot sleep with the wind rocking the caravan, yet again!! Ginger George the kitten is racing round, quite oblivious to the howling gale outside ....wish I could be as unbothered as him.
Had blizzards and high winds the last few days, and its cutting out power supply, and my internet connection at times.
Wednesday afternoon the wind was so bad I worried the chicken coops with the banties and the small chicks would take off or fall over, so scooped up the occupants and put them in a hen crate in the hay barn, and thats where they have stayed. Although the wind has lifted the corrugated roof off there, but I feel its safer for them in there.
I think I prefer the snow to these high winds.
It goes quiet for a couple of minutes, then a giant gust rocks the caravan again. Looks like another sleepless night, worrying about roofs taking off, and trees falling on animal sheds. Pointless really, not much I can do to stop these things happening, but cannot help worrying.
Only good thing is, we are used to bad weather here, and our sheds/roofs are usually built to take it. But they have taken some severe batterings in the last couple of weeks!!
Hope you are all ok, and not suffered too much storm damage.
-
it was quite scary and I think we lost a few slates, not to mention the greenhouse :(. will inspect the damage closer as soon as it is light...I was quite stunned at the stoicism the birds handled it with - 9 ducks holding their heads into the freezing stormwind in the middle of the lawn and some chickens running around in it, too. I would have guessed that they look for shelter. Or did they know something we didn't that they avoided going near the house? :&>
-
Sorry about the greenhouse :( NFD and I hope you got some sleep Roxy :-*
The wind's gone, as has the snow on the ground around the house this morning, but it's snowing again now.....All the chook/duck/ geese houses are still where i left them and we have a flag roof so the wind can't shift those. Buckets etc. everywhere, too dark to check the greenhouse........

back online after a 20 hour powercut. Thank goodness, otherwise the 4 sheep in our chest freezer would have started defrosting! They did quite well the electricity people as there were 3 different causes of our outage; a high voltage line problem, low voltage line problem and a tree on the line!
-
Thank goodness, otherwise the 4 sheep in our chest freezer would have started defrosting!
If you keep your freezer shut the temperature stays low for quite a while - ours were ok last April (2010) for almost three days of no power!

thats reassuring thanks! will stop worrying so much now! I do keep it full, which helps but didnt know how long that would work for! Power back on now but dogs reminded me I promised to cook them a nice chewy old cast ewe leg of mutton so they have their wish....:-)))

We're just back online after a 22 hour power cut. Winds were pretty scary, lying in bed and the bed was rocking .....and not a good way either ;). Got up at 12.30am to go to the loo and shone the torch over to the polytunnel only to see a huge gaping hole in the end. Took me until 3am to repair it (OH was ill in bed and I really didn't want to drag him out.) Animals all fine although the hens totally refused to come out of their house so we relented and fed them inside. Winds are down to a balmy 56mph now so things are feeling better. Hope everyone else is safe and dry.
-
We are just in front off the Cairngorms the wind speed was a 100 mph the electrics try didn't go off we have a lot off young stock so that was good will not get out for a fire days a lot off mess to sort out . No Internet just the phone.was working all day till 5 we naw have 4 inches off snow so will be out Att 8 to sort lambs out.its good fun in scotland .i hope everey bodey is safe all the best.

They took off fine no problems just rather gusty. ATC do a wonderful job behind the scenes my daughter has nothing but admiration for them. Will ask her if she knows your two pals, she is frequently in and out of Aberdeen.

We've lost our stables roof :(
-
Oh no! Everyone ok?
-
I think we fared pretty well although every rope/ratchet tie down was off the sheep shelter in the morning but all roofing still there (by some miracle) but at least goat shed is intact, kennel fine and all animals fine so can't complain - will have to spend a while picking up buckets, food troughs etc - oh and my OH house sign bit the dust - snapped in half

o no!! are the animals OK? did you find the roof anywhere? (or has it gone the same mystery place as the chicken feed dustbin lid from here.....?
