Can anyone tell me what the difference is between eggnog and Advocat when you make it yourself? In my late teens ;) I used to make something using only vodka, whole eggs, icing sugar, vanilla and cream - whatever it was called :D but it was rather nice... :&>

Sounds great. ;D :yum:
We used to drink 'Snowball's - I think it was Advocat & lemonade? Usually had a glace cherry in too. (I think it was probably supposed to be a cocktail cherry but I liked it with a glace one!)

No idea but I LOVE Snowballs - that was the first drink my folks would let me have at the bells, on Hogmanay. I think I liked the cherry best. Hmm, must get a bottle - unless you have a recipe, nfd?

This recipe is from a very old Farmer's Weekly (or Farmer and Stockbreeder as it was then)
" 6 eggs, preferably brown ones
3 lemons
1/4 lb. brown sugar
1/2 pint brandy
Wipe eggs and place in a stoppered glass bottle, care being taken to avoid cracking or breaking them. Sqeeze over them the juice of the lemons, replace stopper and leave to stand, undisturbed for five days, when the eggs will be completely dissolved.
Add the sugar and shake until dissolved. Strain and pour onto the brandy. Bottle and allow to stand for a month before use.
This makes an excellent pick-me-up for invalids and is much appreciated where solid food is barred.
Dose 2 spoonfuls."
Rosemary, you only have to add lemonade and you will have a "Snowball" :)

have not found a recipe yet as tasty as what I produced those many years ago! I suppose you can make it up according to taste, thickenss and sweetness with the ingredients I listed and vary the alcohol according to what you like, vodka or rum or brandy. that's what I will do soon. I don't remember if I used whole eggs or only yolks, but I think yolks make a richer tecture. Not sure about the lemon ;D, I would add Vanilla instead without the shells ;D Sylvia, yours sounds very interesting, though. :&>

Ah! But would yours revive invalids? ;D ;D

I have a recipe somewhere that uses egg yolks and evaporated milk, my mum used to make the non-alcoholic version for us kids way back in the 70s.... I have a (homemade) bottle in my fridge that was produced before we moved into our current house, so it was before January 2007! Still great to drink - alcohol definitely preserves it!
Great poured over ice cream!
