Title: My baby Bunny has gone
Post by: Mel on October 23, 2011, 09:27:40 am
Hi all, :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I recently wrote about my lab ex gun dog and her being so nervous and was working with her to make things better. As said in a previous post I noticed over just 7 days she was becoming bloated,in the end I took Bunny to my vet.I have to say I am angry due to them diagnosing her with Pyometra and that she needed urgent surgery. My vet quoted me £1000 which I have to say,I did not have,The secretary referred Bunny to another vet in kettering-easy pet care.Whom advised they would take on the emergency surgery and it would be £285.00!... It was my vet whom diagnosed Bunny with the Pyometra-100%. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

So I took my Bun along with some hope,I know that the chances are not good,However, the vet called me after opening Bunny up and said-Bun had extensive cancer, the main one being as large as a football, she was amazed that Bun had kept going and was very perky pre surgery.

She said,Bun would have collapsed within a week, she did not recognise her insides as that of a bitch due to being so heavily covered in cancer-in all her 20 years, she said it was the worst case she had ever seen and was better to let her go whilst under, than bring her around again. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Ever since I have been taking Bun to my local vet,all they kept doing was push Royal Canin at £50.00 per bag so Bun could lose some weight,it was all about as he put it,she was very obese at 7 yrs of age and being 33kg.She was originally 35kg when she came to me,I got her down to 31KG as they would not spay her until she was 29KG. This was 5 months ago.She was due to be done in September, but again, too overweight..

Bunny was so different to any I had ever had,she loved me implicitly,I could not go out of the hosue for 10 minutes and she would wine in front of Chris, worried, where I had gone to.Bun always slept with me,she was so incredibly adorable and I am so fricking gutted.-excuse me,but I really hurt..

My bill for the initial diagnoses from my local vet was £331.00 so all in all,£600.00 and my Bun has gone..This is just so unfair.!!! :'( :'( :'(

Oh Leghorn, that is so sad.  I remember that same pic only recently showing bunny with screwed up eyes and you said that's what she did when she was nervous and I thought it was sooo sweet.

It is bad enough having a loved pet put down but to be misdiagnosed by the vet is horrible and the costs into the bargain even worse.

Interesting you saying about the vets pushing Royal Canin. My cat has always been a bit sickly and the vets pushed Royal Canin on us too. It didn't make any difference and since I have found something cheaper myself that works much better.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

RIP Bunny  :bouquet:

So so sorry to hear your sad story.

I would ask for a vet's report from the second vet and pass it to the first vet, and ask if they would be prepared to make any adjustment to the bill.  You don't have to be confrontational about it; you might get some money off the bill and you would let the vets know, without having to explicitly state it, that they mismanaged your dog's condition.

On Royal Canin, I have always been rather suspicious of feeds that result in reduced volume hard poos.  I know what I want my dogs' poos to look like so that I know they are healthy with happy insides - and it isn't like that.  And for a bloated dog, I would have thought you want to be feeding bran and fibre, the very opposite of Royal Canin!

My thinking is that feeds like Royal Canin were invented for people in towns who have to pick up and carry their dogs' poos home with them - the less the dog produces, the easier it is to pick up and carry.

Awwww...I'm so, so sorry for your loss, what a dreadful time for you.   I second what's been said by SallyITN and speak to your vets about a reduction in the bill - due to their misdiagnosis.

I am sooooo sorry for your loss. We lost 2 English Setters to cancer this year, so I know how you are feeling. However, the first vet misdiagnosing like that is absolutely disgusting and even if it were pyometra £1000 is a ridiculous price.  I also would not touch Royal Canin, we once had a vet who tried the same thing but I refused. It is only for the profit they make. But all this does not help you. Time does help but she will always live on in your memory. R.I.P. Bunny

Been there, done that, got the scars :'( :'( It will take a long time but it will get bearable and, eventually better, though you will never forget (nor would you want to)
The only thing I can say in the vet's defence is that he is human and made a human mistake. Probably nothing could have been done had he diagnosed correctly.
Take special care of yourself :bouquet: :bouquet:

So sad, she did look so sweet, maybe her anxiety was due to her being ill and so feeling vulnerable......

We all get mis sold stuff, wrong diagnosed with cars, heating, health etc and feel P;d off to say the least. I know many mums who have taken children back and forward to Dr and the Dr says something like "just growing pains" or, they will grow out of it, when in fact, the mum knows best and its some thing much more seriouse, a good friends son died of skin cancer just in his early teens!!!!!!

I think we get a very special attatchment to our pets, so much an important part of our life that none of us want to see gone!!!! Have a few tears but then think she went without knowing anything other than peace!!!! :bouquet:

So sorry to hear about Bunny, be comforted she would have known she was loved and cared for, you feel let down by your vet, (I know that feeling, almost same situation), but if she was perky up till the op, she couldn't have been suffering, so you saved her that.
Take care

I agree that you should let your first vet know of the misdiagnosis.  Pyometra is relatively easy to diagnose and it doesn't necessarily involve bloating.  They can see it on a simple scanner, and it looks a whole lot different to cancer tumours.  I am so sad that you have had such a bad experience, but everyone is right here, Bunny wouldn't have known anything about it, and would have felt secure in your love.

Very sorry to hear your story - we lost 2 dogs this year but they were very old so it was expected but I know how you feel. As i get older I think I evaluate what vets say a little more than blindly following their advice but it's so difficult when all you want is the best for your animals. At the end of the day you were a very loving owner and Bunny was a lucky dog xx
