hi there my lambs are ready to go need some info on costs and where to go i am in edinburgh cheers
-
you are spoiled for choice dunblane shotts wishaw galashields st andrews depends on what day suits and time but phone them first as to day of kill time to be there and what they charge lambs that weigh 42 kilos are around £17 to kill heavier one they charge more :farmer: also are they for yourself have you weighed them
-
yes they are for myself .i have not weighed them as cant get my hands on a set of scales do they butcher them for you at the abattoir ,wishaw or shotts look the best bet cheers

We use St Andrew's abattoir and Stuart Minick butchers them. Stuart has shops in St Andrews and he's very nice and helpful.
However, both Stuart and the abattoir are very busy. I phoned on Wednesday and can't get mine in until 14th November - and the abattoir doesn't like doing private kills in November. So don't hang around if it's the same all over.

Galashiels has stopped killing sheep and cattle, they are now transported live to Shotts, collected from St Boswells. Carcasses are then taken back to Gala for hanging and collection by butchers/individuals. No idea how I am going to get my pluck... used to be able to go to the abatoir on the day of kiling and pick it up!
Sad state of affairs.... Not sure how I will be getting my own animals (Shetland mutton as opposed to lamb) back... homekill is seriously discussed here!

I use Chapman's at Shotts, then Chapman's butcher. They are really helpful, it comes back all packaged. I was charged, last month £12 killing fee and 70p a kilo for butchering. They can deliver it, not sure how much but I usually pick up.

croftgary you must be nearer st Andrews does chapmans do it in a big plastic bag or is it vac packed as it would be in shops that would be lambs weighing 42 kilos do they charge more for heavier ones :farmer:
-
Hi, I may be nearer but it is a lot more start and stops and would be more stress for the animals, I have only put shetlands away so not sure if it is more expensive for bigger sheep. It's not vac packed but comes as you would buy from a shop it looks very professional. I have always found them friendly and helpful.

This year it's £40 kill and cut for our lambs at St Andrews - vacuum packed, your own label and pricing if you want it. Wee bit more if you want lamb sausages - had some last year and they were fab. Lamb and mint or lamb and Chilli. :yum:

There was a thread started on here a while back listing all the abattoirs that had been variously recommended on this website. I'll try and have a look for it.

Oaklands Pigs maintain a list, here's their post about it:
