We are looking for a good quality sheep weighing crate, preferably one that doesn't have a top bar across, so I can also use it for goatlings, as well as sheep and pigs. Merchanical weigh head preferred
1) We have looked at the Ritchie one (too expensive), the IAE one (acceptable price, but has top bar/cage design) and also the Modulamb one (no reply from them yet as to price/delivery options). Can someone recommend the Modulamb one - I think their design looks best for our needs? We don't mind byuing new if it is good quality and does the job. Any other makes that are recommended?
2) Does anyone in the North of England (Cumbria or Northumbria) or in South/Central Scotland have a good quality second hand one for sale?

Hens teeth, Anke. They come up at farm sales now and again - and usually fetch near (or sometimes over) new price.
I know it's expensive but I can't speak highly enough of the Ritchie one. I also got them to make a small modification to the design for me - they said what a good idea and didn't charge any extra. Sadly for me, that was on the moorland sheep farm and I had to leave it there! BH has an old and rather decrepit one (we're not sure what make); he has been on the lookout for a good secondhand one for more than four years... and he loves farm sales...

yes they do come up for sale some times never seen one make new price YET the ritchie one is from memory over £1000 also the base for the cattle weigh crate is about the same price without the crate you can pick them up not working (with a reasonable crate) for cheap as chips and revamp them very simple to do well at least i did with mine that way you can weigh big sheep sows and boars also large pigs if you keep them to over 130 kilos :farmer:

Paid £395 for our Ritchie Lamb Weigh crate (brand new and modified to my spec; manual, analog scale) in July 2007.
I think a pig weighing crate is a lot heftier and more expensive than a lamb one, robert, so maybe that's where your grand comes from.

The Ritchie 660G lamb Weigher is £678 RRP
and the 663G Pig and Lamb Weigher is £863 RRP
If you phone the local rep who lives in Penrith he will be able to put you in touch with a local dealer who may give you a discount! They also may have a second in the factory at a reduced price, The local man is David Richardson.PM me for his phone number or go onto the Ritchie website.

Thanks, I have got a reasonable price from a local dealer for the iae one, but was hoping someone had info about the modulamb one - I had no reply from the company as yet. Will try... but it looks as if it will be a new rather than secondhand purchase...

You might be best to phone modulamb- they have never been great at replying through the website. Last time I spoke to him was a year and half ago, and he said then that the queries weren't working very well from the site.
Which reminds me- I need to phone them too as the hayracks I ordered at the highland show have never turned up!
