What is an Indian summer?
The record has been broken for the highest temperature recorded in October - now at 29.9C (85.8F).
It was set at 14:42 BST in Gravesend, Kent, beating the previous record of 29.4C (85.9F) recorded on 1 October 1985, in the town of March, Cambridge.
In Wales, a new October record was set at 28.2C (82.7F) in Hawarden, Flintshire, at 14:12 BST, the Met Office confirmed.
Temperatures in England topped those in Athens, Los Angeles and Barcelona.
But it was a different story in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland with outbreaks of rain and temperatures tipping just 17C (62.6f).
In Edinburgh on Wednesday the high was 24.7C (76.4F) - the warmest day in Scotland for the time of year for more than 50 years.
Met Office forecaster Andrew Sibley said: "We have had southerly wind for several days which has brought very warm air up from the south."

and don't I know it? Passed out with heatstroke at Driffield dog show yesterday and was medivacced to the first aid tent to be cooled with ice packs on all main arteries! I was told the sun was beating down on my neck and the air wasn't being refreshed in the main tent, temperature was 32C. I wasn't 'with it' for about half an hour. They didn't quite get round to giving me oxygen ;D

The weather is lovely but it is making it hard to get on with autumn jobs ie hedge cutting and shrub pruning. I normally do the sheeps hooves this weekend but because of the dry weather they are like concrete so will have to just do the ones that are desperate and put the job back a few weeks.
I normally have finished the lawn cutting for the year but it looks as if I will have another couple of cuts this year and the new fencing has to wait as well until the ground softens.
The horse is confused as he started to bring in a thicker coat and now is sweating up and I have plants flowering again that should have finished for the year it is very pretty but what will it do to them in the long run.
I had to run for shade yesterday afternoon as it got too hot to continue with the outdoor jobs and I'm not good in high temperatures (must be my northern blood)

Poor Annie - hope you're feeling better now.
No problem with any heat related issues here - it's pouring rain. But not cold, to be fair.

i said that records would be broken over a week a go .and soon the next record for cold wether .will be broken.
