Title: What a book...
Post by: Blinkers on September 21, 2011, 07:59:58 pm
I've yet again just retrieved my book by Tim Tyne "The Sheep Book for Smallholders" from the shelf and spent a pleasant half hour just going over the "Autumn" section to remind myself about allsorts  ;).    I love this time of year as there's such a lot to monitor and get rather excited about what with all the pre-tupping MOTs and then getting those tups in there and noticing how much they've worked  ;D ;D

For no other reason except that if anyone wants ideas for Xmas presents etc....this book is just BRILLIANT.  It gave me the confidence to Tube feed a lamb for the first time...which I'd always been tentative about...and its my absolute Bible for all things SHEEP.    HIGHTLY recommended reading and VERY EASY to read to.

Thanks again to Tim for increasing my knowledge and confidence over the past couple of years.....and for years to come no doubt

If you're a sheepkeeper....you won't regret it.    It now stays by my side until after lambing next Spring  ;D....then it may move a few yards away....but be referred to again and again.  ;)

Thanks Baz.  :)

We hoped the books section (http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/books/) would take off so good to see those Google results already.

Anyone who has read this book (or any of the others we list) please add your comments to the relevant pages on TAS too, it really helps others find the best books on the major topics - and Amazon as well since that's where VSS and other authors will see most benefit.  :)

another big thumbs up from me for this book. i've got two copies, one clean one that stays at home and one with a rainbow (a rather dirty rainbow!) of coloured finger prints all over it which is in a shed on farm. brilliant book for info and just a good read over a cuppa.

I bought one for a friend of mine (Dot got Tim to sign it as Carol is a big fan (as we all are, of course)) - I had a sneaky read before I wrapped it but I've now ordered my own copy.

My OH wrote it - but there was quite a lot of researching and picture work done by yours truly. The next book wil be a true joint effort with both our names on the cover.

So glad everyone is finding useful - Tim's aim was to write the book he wished he had had when he was starting with sheep. Sounds like he might have succeeded.  ;D

Hi Blinkers and all, this is just what I was looking forward. Just ordered one, can't wait for it to come. I had Just been looking at the pictures of the GreyfaceDartmoors on this section and decided I seriously need to learn about sheep and consider having some. If you havn't seen the pics check them out you cant help but love them.

I am yet another who frets if I can't find my copy.  And it does tend to walk around as I consult it so often.

Noticed a few people mentioning they needed a good book on pigs. My Haynes Pig Manual covers everything you will need, from selecting a breed and raising your first weaners, through to breeding, AI, and farrowing - all with lots of clear pictures and diagrams.

I have the Haynes Pig Manual and can recommend it. Anything with nice colour pics seems to work better for me.
A useful book and an interesting read too.
thanks Liz

Re the Tim Tyne book, everyone suggested I get one and I found the £95 one from Amazon too  :(  but then I got a copy at the Royal Welsh Spring Festival which Tim signed for me. He only had 3 copies when I was there.

Thank you all for the kind words about the Haynes Pig Manual. I did a search on Tim's book today, and WH Smith is selling it online for (if I remember rightly) £22.95 with free postage.

be careful with this.... i ordered Tim's book from WHSmiths about 4 weeks ago and they hadn't got any copies as it was being reprinted....so i cancelled the order. it may be worth checking first before placing an order
Luckily Good Life Press had a few copies left

Cheers

We've added WHSmith to our smallholding books (http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/books/) section now, but as kumquat says be wary of their lead times.

We ordered Tim's book from them ages ago and after a few weeks got an email saying they couldn't fulfil the order. In the end we got it from Good Life Press direct too.

The Good Life Press do have a very few copies of the first edition left - no other retailers have any copies left.

Tim has a couple of copies left if anyone wants one signed.

A reprint is being worked on now and should be available late summer, certainly in time for the Scottish Smallholder show.

I ordered my copy from The Good Life Press yesterday and it came this morning!  Brilliant - hard back and cost me £31 including post/packaging.  Haven't got anything done for the last 2 hours though, can't wait until bedtime (post Famous Five Go Camping with the kids).

I also love Tim's book (and the Haynes Pig Manual) even though I am just at the research and dreaming stage for sheep and pigs.

The invaluable book I have is Dave Holerread (sp?) book "The Storey Guide to keeping and Raising Ducks". Think it is a brilliant book and have read it again and again. The Duck Bible!
