Title: piggy weight
Post by: goodlife on September 15, 2011, 10:23:55 pm
Hi all

I got my 3 pigs and i am enjoying every minute, though possible getting far to attached

I did some measuring for weight and 2 are 126lbs and the other is 50lb lighter

I am after your advice as to how to bring her on and should I take 1 for slaughter soon and let the other get bigger while the smaller catches up

they are 24 weeks now
1 boar (intact) with 2 sows any advice greatly appreciated

if they are the same breed it is unlikely the lighter one will catch up
separate feeding might shorten the gap but you do risk it getting to fat :farmer:

Sounds to me like the two larger pigs are bullying the smaller one at meal times, as Robert suggests feed her separately from the others and decrease what you're giving the others, you can easily knock them back to 3lb feed a day split between two feeds and up the smaller pigs to 6lb split between feeds and see if this helps. Be careful about your boar serving them as they're now at an age to be sexually active. Personally i'd send the boar off now for pork and send the girls a little later when the other has caught up a little.
