Our pears are always hard. They fall off hard, they never soften on the tree. I was told this is normal and that pears never ripen on a tree. In an attempt to get pears to ripen I've tried the following, none of the below have ever worked:
1) Leave pears on tree to ripen
2) Pick pears and put in fruit bowl with other fruit inc bananas
3) Pick pears and don't put with any other fruit
The usual results are usually a withered pear or a rotten black centered pear, and I've tried the above with both fallen and picked pears.
Does anyone pick their own pears and know how we can get ours to go soft?

Do you know what type of pear it is?
Williams and Comice will go nice and juicy but conference don't.
My Comice this year went very juicy sat on the worktop for 4 days

Thanks for the reply. We have a few pear trees in the orchard so have several varieties of pear, inc the three you list.
So you picked yours hard and left to ripen?
Ah well. I'll keep trying but it looks like more pear chutney on it's way......... :-\

I didn't have many pears..small tree... and 2 years ago some oik stole all my apples and lemons when tey were ripened to perfection..so now I pick the slightly under ripe and let them finish indoors.
It's academic now...just bought a new place:whole new challenges

Aha I've been waiting for my cinference pears to ripen on the tree. I'll pick them tomorrow. :thumbsup:

Put them in a brown paper bag in a drawer but check on them daily, this works on most fruit.
