Title: horseradish
Post by: Izzy on September 01, 2011, 06:11:22 pm
I planted  3 horseradish roots a few years ago. As yet I haven't lifted to have a look. I understand freshness is key so I thought I'd ask on here before investigating what's going on under soil level. Has anyone here made anything from horseradish?

Thank your lucky stars Rosemary!  ;D. I planted some years ago, and have been trying to get rid of it ever since!

i use horseradish a lot - and I use it fresh and ocasionally I grate it and put it in vinegar and keep in the fridge so I can make horseradish sauce quickly, but it is not as good IMO.

Its lovely cooked it white sauce with vegetables and works really well with starchy vegs like potatoes or Jerusalem artichokes.

I replanted mine when we put in our polytunnel - this year it has returned with a vengenace.

Just horseradish sauce.

Whatever you do, use the spoon in your mouth trick - it really does work

;D Horseradish is really potent. Now I'm quite hardy most onions rarely make me cry - but horseradish has me streaming  :'(
I tried running the tap while I was doing it - finally, feeling like a right fool, I tried the spoon ( it might of been mentioned in the recipe- not sure now), if the bowl part is held in the roof of your mouth by you tongue it seems to do the trick. No more  :'( magic  ;D

Pull it and store it in a box of really dry sand just as you would with carrots and parsnips. Grate it into some cream for a smooth horseraddish sauce.
