Title: New arrivals!
Post by: Dougal on August 27, 2011, 07:10:22 pm
Well that was the Thainstone sale today. Decided that a couple o' leghorns would be nice for the flock, and a couple o cream legbars would make the egg boxes look pretty with blue eggs.
Now home with 2 marans pullets, 2 white leghorn pullets, 3 cream legbar growers and a trio of exchequer leghorns. All that's missing is a the partridge and the pear tree!
It's fair to say that the birds were cheaper on the day than the may sale so we were still fairly close to budget... sort of  :D. Was very tempted by the Longhorn heifers but was told that there wasn't that much in the budget! That and the fact they wouldn't fit in the poultry coop!

I am terrible when I go to sales, the last one at Lanark my hubby sent my Dad to chaperone so I didn't come home with allsorts  ::)

I purposely did not take a trailer and still managed to bring home a wee Soay ram lamb who I felt sorry for and paid the pricely sum of 15 guineas.

Prices varied. I got very carried away and managed to pay £12.50 a skull for some but then others were much much cheaper. £8 a life would probably be near the avargae with a really good selection. A lot of young stock there but still much cheaper than in May.

Dougal, do you mind me asking how much were the exchequer leghorns?  And were they banties or large fowl?  BH has always fancied some but we've never seen any nice well-marked healthy ones that fetched other than silly money.

I paid 20 notes for a point of lay trio. They're not the best marked but they are strong enough for me to let them straight out into the flock. They were large fowl as well. That would have been the average price for the leghorns in general. Nothing was very well marked, very few show stoppers amoung them but if they lay eggs then they tick all the boxes I need ticked.

Thanks Dougal.  I'll keep looking then, we'd not seen anything as affordable as 20 notes per bird so had pretty much given up.  Our birds are completely free range, and if we cooped them we still couldn't protect them from the dratted mink, so we never think it's worth spending megabucks on lovely birds - Sod's Law would ensure they'd be the ones foxy got, of course...

We have thousands of vermin up here as well, thankfully most of them are game keepers so foxes and mink tend to be limited in number! There were quite a few exchequers for sale at the weekend, 3 or 4 cages of them at least.
