Title: Second batch of pigs have arrived
Post by: white-blazes on August 08, 2011, 01:27:06 pm
We've had our second batch this weekend. We thought we'd now take on 4, rather than 2 as our first batch.

They've been tattooed this time by the breeder.  He's under the impression that when we take them at approx 6 months to the local slaughter 7 miles away, that there'd be no need for us to put our tags in, that the tattoo is enough?

It'd be a darn side easier for us if we didn't have to tag (that was our only bad experience with the first 2 pigs).

So, acting dumb again, don't shoot me down - 'do we need to tag them for our own use when they go to slaughter' ??

thanks in advance :pig:

Yes, you will have to tag with metal tags showing your herd number.  The tattoo is usually the BPA registration letters and numbers of the breeder.

I find it easiest to tag the night before they go to the abattoir.  I do it when they are eating and they hardly notice.

Enjoy your pigs  :pig:
