Title: Pigs in shows?
Post by: welshlass181 on August 02, 2011, 07:08:09 pm
Hi do i have to have a travel document thingy to take a pig to a show?  Do i need any paperwork?  Do they need ear tagging (under a year old)? Thinking of taking our castrated boar to a local show just for giggles :)

what is the point of taking a castrate to a show    unless they have a pet section        and yes you do need a movement licence    it should be able to be identifed                 it would not be you giggling it would be the other competitors and the public       unless there is a pet class :pig: :farmer: :pig:

It doesn't say entire boar it just says pig class.  They can giggle all they want lol it is only for fun as far as we're concerned.  I;d go just to annoy people who get hoity about showing :) and the reason i would take him is because he is the most comical one i have :) and my entire boar only has 1 ball (he is managing to cover females but not 100% sure if he is working) not that it is a huge issue.

As far as i've can figure out (until i phone them) the pigs are judged in pens and not paraded ...... see that would be soooo funny to watch :) my lil Chopin is not the brightest of sparks and likes to run in circles.  If we do decide to go then hubby will be staying with him.  I don't really care what people say or think and if i can make people smile then thats a good day.  He's not a show pig he is a castrated pet with a massive personality :)

The trouble is we'd wanna walk him in a pink dog harness if we did have to parade him just to annoy the other hoity toity people in the class.  I've nvr been to this show and only got the paperwork this evening so going to phone them tomorrow and find out.  Sister in law went last year and they paraded the cattle, sheep and horses but not the pigs.  Time will tell lol cos i seriously doubt that we'll get him to walk with a board ...... he'd run his circles around us lol and plus it'll be a right laugh (if we go) having fun is what animal keeping is meant to be about if you're doing it as more of a hobby than a living, which we are.

no no dog harness a stick and a board are the prefered method     unless your pig takes off at great spead with you in hot persuit :farmer:

::) in all my years of attending shows i have never seen a castrated animal in the ring, well with the exception of village fairs where they hold pet shows.

i cant see any point in showing a castrated animal.

you will need to take your movement licence on arrival to the show you should be meet with trading standards that will check paper work and keep their copy on departure you will have to collect a licence to return the animal home, on arrival home to will be on a stand still unless you have a isolation certificate.

in all the shows i have been i have never met a hoity pig man/woman plenty up for a laugh (and a drink or three)  ;)

i have seen pigs judged in the pens at very small shows but most have them out in the ring.

HA this makes me more inclined to try to get him entered now :) like the idea of people getting snotty and saying "why?" if we go it'll be for fun and nothing else.  By the sounds of it pig showers are as snotty as some showy horsey people and i love to annoy them

Unless you want to look a right idiot and a stupid one at that you should not take this boar to a show. All boars must be handled by two competent adults with boards and sticks. Boars no matter how tame they are at home can soon become aggressive especially if other males are present. By all means take a young gilt and show that.
Pig show people are some of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet and if youwish is to be ostracized form the communtity then by all means go ahead but expect no help or sympathy when you get in trouble. If you wish to show pigs go to a real show and see how its done there are plenty around at this time of year.
Don't be such a silly bitch i really thought you had more sense ::) ::) ::)

Whoa there folks (calm down, calm down  ;))  ;D

Michelle, I completely understand you wanting to show your wee guy, if he's soppy and affectionate and sweet (can't blame you  ;)) BUT there are rules for the majority of shows. And although I've never met any hoity toity pig folk in my life (how can you be when you spend all your time knee deep in mud ?) folks like to follow the correct etiquette when showing. After all, it's the only chance breeders have to show the world how good their pigs are - hence it being deemed pointless showing your castrate (doesn't matter how good he is, if he's not got his bits  :-\)
I'll not go into all the rules for shows (these are shows with breed classes, where pigs are being judged against set 'standards' with the possibility of progressing to one of the BPA Pig of the Year shows or similar) but if it's a local show and they're having a 'pet' or 'other pig' class, then by all means enter him and let everyone else see what a sweet little guy he is, but it's a lot of time and effort spent washing, training and filling in paperwork only to get there and be turned away because he's not eligible to enter. (If it's breed classes, he has to be registered pedigree and correctly identified to enter, usually)
It is great fun showing pigs (though I wouldn't fancy trying to use a harness, visions of speeding pig dragging me behind it  ::)) and no-one wants to put you off, we're just trying to save your blushes  :-*
Posted your envelope today btw, should be with you soon,
Karen  :-*

Nothing is set in stone yet and it's not as if we don't have enough to choose from.  It's a local show and we were only going to go for giggles lol my sister in law told us about it and the talks got out of hand.  Showing isn't something that appeals to me anyway as my herd is for meat pure and simple.  Oh well never mind lol seems that people have no sense of humour anymore

laugh    it is the best laugh i have had in weeks   i tried to keep it informative and not getting on  at you     you will not get a more friendly bunch than pig people  always willing to help out  and we should know  bill and shirley howes  Stuart and Jodie and john sutcliffe all stand forward and take a bow  chickenfeed as well   now Mandy i don't think we have met YET      but we all have different opinions
now if we are still living at next years yorkshire show the Scottish party in the new pig area should be a lively affair first song up will be the proclaimers   i will walk 500 miles then deacon blue/Donnie munroe and the Corrie's   two weeks till we leave for hatfield  3 maybe 4 nights and a station for Lillian within walking distance
now you have said you want to show pigs go on  give it a whirl you know you want to and if you are anything like us the more somebody says no the more determined you get
none of us went to bed knew sod all and woke up the next morning and knew everything :farmer:

Don't object to anyone showing their pigs the more the merrier but as HH says there are rules and having seen boars fight its no laughing matter, WL also has to realise that if she takes her pig to a show she will be on standstill for 20 days on her return, there are rules for a reason. Robert agree with all the things you say and if i ddi;' have 3 bulged discs in my back i'd have met you both at the Yorks. Now that i've got the right painkillers & therapy i'm missing a show as i have a pig due to farrow and it looks like its going to be a beautiful day. Showing is mean't to be fun and a pleasurable experience but i'm afraid Wl's tone really got my back up, pig people put a lot of time and effort into their show pigs and for her to belittle them and cast apertions was a step too far.
Like you says we all have our opinions and thats what makes the world go round!
Now i really must go to work!
