Title: sore eye
Post by: mab on August 02, 2011, 01:05:28 pm
Hi all my dog Jess has developed a sore eye - don't know if she poked it with a claw or what - I just awoke in the morning to find her winking at me and watering. I can't see anything in the eye but it's difficult to be sure as she won't let me look properly.

A while ago she managed to damage the eye by running into a barbed wire fence -  there's a prick mark right in the middle - I took her to the vets and got some drops to put in and it's been fine for a couple of months now, but I can still see the mark from the barbed wire, and I'm wondering if it's the old injury flaring up.

Has anyone got any suggestions before I allow the vets to empty my wallet again?

thx

When my GSD does this I just bath it in clean boiled water (cooled) ever few hours if it is no better in a couple of days we go off to the vets which was only once and that was because I couldn't get a grass seed out.

Stick a tea bag in the boiled water - and remove it once the water's cool.  The tannins act as an antiseptic  ;)
Don't be tempted to use salt water - it hurts like hell  :o
Gently flush the eye - you can either soak a cotton wool ball and squeeze it or fill a sports bottle and let it TRICKLE over the eye (no squirting)
Try not to let her paw at it (one of those cone collar's would do the trick if you've got one) and don't be tempted to try and take anything out yourself.
Hope she's feeling better soon, poor girl  :(

I have an Ibby who often has scabby ears/eyes. I use Brolene eye drops on both with good results.

I always wondered why my mammy recommended a teabag on sore eyes. I'm not sure SHE knew - but it works.

Thanks everyone!

I'd never've thought of the teabag thing in a million years!

luckily she's self disciplined enough that if I tell her to stop rubbing she does, so that's probably not a problem.

right! where are those tea bags....
