Title: I've got sunburnt knees
Post by: Ionahenatlast on July 25, 2011, 08:38:21 am
From spending the entire weekend sitting in a chair in the garden watching my chooks  :)
I don't know if this is the correct place to post or not sorry in advance, but i'm just so excited to actually have my hens that i'm bursting to talk about them and OH and kids are just being sarky to me but i think thats because they've had to fend for themselves the past couple of days lol.
So they are all taking on a wee bit of a personality already and there is definitely a pecking order, i feel quite sorry for the baldiest as it is the lowest in the order but i hope one she feathers up she'll be ok.
What else ooh yes they are getting used to me and realise that i'm the food lady  ;D an last but not least i've had 4 eggs from them, the first one was tiny like a sparrow egg but the rest have all been big perfectly formed ones.

Hope your knees are not too stiff and red, I agree that watching chickens is time consuming, I used to do it when I had a tea break and once, I put the tea bag down and they all ran around taking it off each other. I found the scruffs were the most entertaining, I have two that looked smaller as well as having fewer feathers, their combs fell to the side like little French Berets and they were little sods to cats, fast and agile. I have had mine a while now, one got drowned by a Duck and another 2 died after around 1 year but the rest are brilliant and my fatty one, Big Sandy, sits next to the gate to greet me!!!! I wish I had chickens when my children were growing up, fascinating!!

Well done, and congrats on getting your first livestock!! Many a happy day will be spent watching them as they go about their business, and many a restless night will be spent worrying about mites, aand feeding, aaaand frozen water, aaaaaaaand predators.  :) :) :) It is so exciting getting your first eggs. i remember I drove all the way to my sons primary school to show him our first egg!! Ohhhhhh Muuuuuum!! luckily he was only five so the experience wasnt too embarrassing!!
Enjoy!!
