Title: Lovely people
Post by: helskitchen on July 24, 2011, 08:21:00 pm
We saw an ad on preloved yesterday morning, for some free chickens.  I phoned her and she said she runs a hatching project with some local schools where she takes in an incubator and lets the children watch the eggs hatch.  Once they hatch she can't keep the birds, so she wanted to rehome them.  We went and had a look, they were all gorgeous!  There were Araucanas (lavender trio, white, black and multi brown), a silkie, a black orpington, a pair of marans, 5 white Wynadottes, 19 all together.  They were unsexed but we have been watching them to figure out the boys, they range from 6-16 weeks.  She also has another 6 on heat chicks, and another 24 eggs in the incubator, which are silkies, araucanas, and sultans, which she is going to let us have when they are ready for rehoming. She didn't want any money for them and she just seems to do it for the fun of letting the kids see the chicks hatch!  How lovely is that?  The only downside is that we have to accept that we will probably have to rehome some of the cockerels, but will definately keep the lavender trio of araucanas as they are beautiful.  Love watching chicks grow up!   :chook:

What a great thing to do with kids.  That's how I got my two silly light sussex hens!  I've lost count of how many times I've chased them back into their run just before the dogs come rushing into the paddock.  Any minute now they are having their winds clipped to see if it stops them jumping up onto the fence and down the other side!

That's a lovely selection of birds you got!  Would love to see photos of them.
