Garlic buckets are really very good. takes a couple o weeks before they really start to work but they really stop the flies bothering the cattle.

If you're looking for a natural cure, I can recommend mixing tea tree and citronella essential oils with a carrier oil (like sweet almond) and misting them with that. You can also soak cotton wool in it and hang up round about stables and field shelters too.
No more than 10 drops of oil to 60ml of carrier oil though.

We've just bought garlic buckets - so thanks for the advice that they'll take a while to kick in - it says on the bucket it taints milk- we assume this is only a problem for food chain - calfy not going to wean himself is he? What do you think? No sign yet anyway - he's four months and we'd leave him another few yet - but wouldn't be end of world either - have bought a calf that was weaned at four months and she's fine x
