Title: Any help needed with their Goats (Shropshire or near)
Post by: salopman on July 09, 2011, 03:56:17 pm
Better explain, came across this website by accident but very interested in reading all your goat related posts, I always wanted to keep goats but cant due to living with small domestic garden etc, however thought it would be nice if I could help out with a local small keeper - which would help them and give me an outlet for my interest, so Im in TELFORD in Shropshire - anyone close to me???

So could I have kept you busy! You don't fancy a move to Scotland?!

However in all seriouness, there is a Shropshire Goat Society, here is the contact for secretary

SHROPSHIRE GOATKEEPERS SOCIETY
Mrs H Alderson, Strawbarn, 47 Wellington Road, Coalbrookdale, Telford,
Shropshire.
Tel: 01952 433045

And she is in Telford, so that's handy. Also I found a Burwarton Show on the 4th August that is organised by the Shropshire Goatkeepers, so it might be an idea to go along and see who is there, and have a chat. When running goat shows extra pairs of hands always come in useful, so if you were able to go along, I would contact the secretary in advance because I think she would love someone offering to help at the show.

Wishing Worcestershire was a bit nearer to Shropshire now! Hubby is a reluctant goat helper, bless him but would love some extra help here too  :)

Ah thanks for the reply - have Messaged you as well, yep very frustrating that Shropshire seems a quiet area for goat keepers - either that or they are all very well organised and dont need help lolol

It can sometimes be, not just regarding goats, but all livestock, that owners think its quicker to muddle on themselves, than try and show someone else the ropes!!

Don't give up - there will be someone desperate for help......although in my immediate area, goats are not kept.  People stand and stare at ours (particularly the AN's) and do not know what they are  (deer, alpacas small breed of cow have been some of the suggestions!!)

Well for those of you wanting an end (happy one hopefully) to my plight have had an email from Goat Sec (local) and she is at a show at moment but seemingly there is a man and his wife who breed British Alpines not more than 5 miles from me ! and she is going to ask him if i can muck in etc.
so fingers crossed!

Well at last some satisfaction and inter - reaction with some real live goats!! Went to see Ann and Brian Rhodes today and had a nice look round their goats - kids galore, goatlings, milkers and even some intact males!
First of all I can tell you that BA goats are BIG! The male was huge - like a mini donkey! his name was Simon and he was a real softie, but so big!
We then visited the Goatlings, like mini race horses lol, then we went to see the kids, about 4 months old and so nosey and loving a scratch on the head. Lastly we visited the 16 milkers - mostly BA but some white ones as well.
I then saw Ann milk 4 goats - and quickly too lol, she brought them from their pen and they jumped up on the stand and started munching in the bucket, whilst Ann squirted the milk effortlessly into the bucket. How clever are they to jump on the stands, very clever girls!!
Can't wait to go back, loved it all
