Post by: Daisys Mum on June 03, 2011, 07:30:08 pm

I have just bought 1/2 ton of BOCM pig grower for £177.50 making it £7.10 a bag, just wondered how this compared to what others are paying at the moment.

Hi - I have just had three tonne blown in of sow nuts and paid £260 tonne. A tonne in 25kg bags would have cost £308. We live
in Mid Devon. Hopefully, but I don't think it will happen, feed prices will come down!!!!!

The high price of feed is down to high wheat prices I think I remember hearing about, we have noticed that with our poultry feed recently.
We are getting a couple of Oxford Sandy and Black Gilts tomorrow and have just paid £7.25 for a 25kg bag of weaner food which I thought was quite reasonable compared to the £8.70 we are paying for the poultry feed.

We thought we would mention this.

Up until this year our feed has always been substantially cheaper than UK.  Now we pay 330 euros per ton but minimum of 2 ton which is too much for us now.  Or by the bag its 9.80.  A huge rise on the 4.80/5 euros of last year.

Yes it will if we have another bad winter and loose our own harvest. The reason prices increased this year was because russia held back their harvest until there was little on the market so they could get a better price.

ps Im a feed retailer and also have a smallholding and prices dont want to stabilise at the moment

pig feed in the last twelve months for a 25 kg sow nuts has gone from £7 - £8.55 at our shop due to increase costs from our suppliers

So many pig farmers are going to the wall over here, it may well follow that suppliers will go down the same route, if no one can afford to buy, their costs are increasing all the time too, and with less and less sales as we cut back.  Cant see any winners in this one.  Except perhaps for those who are able to ride the increase, as it may be that finally pork prices will improve too.
