I've just had 2 kids born and they have no cord left - either the nanny bit them off flush with their bellies or they snapped that way - I can see inside their tummies. Obviously this is a serious infection risk - what should I do other than the usual cleaning and dipping. I'm wondering if I should clamp them shut/stitch them closed in some way or just keep them as clean as I can. Help please!

Oh. That's unusual. When you say you can see inside.... how big is the hole? If significant I should think it might need the vet to put a stitch in.
-
If it is a proper hole - vets! Also VERY clean pen for them.

Thanks for your responses.
Actually it's only one that is a problem and I think it will be OK - I've done all the hygiene stuff. I t doesn't look so bad now it's a bit dryer. The hole seems to be closing up - it was about 5mm (I guess the cord had just come away then) but is half that now.

Seriously, they need antibiotic immediately... I mean immediately !!!!
Joint/navel ill is almost certain however clean you have been. Joint ill will strike even if they were born on a stainless steel floor if the bug is about.!!!!
In this case antibiotic spray is not enough... they must have an injection each.

I agree they need antibiotic ASAP and may still need a stitch in as well. The risk of peritonitis and subsequent possible death is high. If it doesn't get peritonitis then joint ill will be the next worry.

Many thanks to all who offered advice - all well now thankyou :-)
