Today I had to have my trusty old Border Collie put to sleep after 15 1/2 years, what a grand old lady.
We originally purchased her on the English side of Hadrian's wall miles from nowhere on a working farm. It was a decision if she or her sister was to be kept for working, her sister was marginally better so we won Jaycee.
As we traveled home she ducked under every bridge on the way home, she was to keep our Cavalier king Charles spaniel company at the time she was the same size as him.
She has since seen him out, another border collie that had a heart condition and than two years ago her last companion.
She has been living with diabetes foe the last two years, not to see her though would you have known. Old age just caught her up in the last few days and it was a heart breaking decision this morning to have her put to sleep., I felt the most mean person in the world to do this to my companion, but it was for her, the time to go.
I'm going to have a glass of wine tonight to celebrate her life.

Hi Kaz,
Just wanted to say how sorry I am, I had to go through getting my german shepherd put to sleep about 4 years ago (he turned aggresive after arrival of 1st baby and with 2nd on the way seemed to sense it & got even worse) we tried every other option but couldn't rehome him because of the aggression and the police / army weren't interested because he was white (too obvious, they said) I know it's not the same thing as being ill and old but it still hurts.
You gave her a great life, and she's at peace now. Please don't beat yourself up about it - enjoy your wine and celebrate her life.

Congratulations on having such a long and happy relationship with Jaycee. Enjoy the wine and the memories, and the comfort of knowing you did the best for her.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am a diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush;
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there; I did not die

Thanks everyone. I feel a bit better today, only missed her once so far this morning when I went to feed her. :(

When I lose one of mine I often hear them barking for a while afterwards when the others start up. You can tell the different voices, they're not all the same. It will pass.
